Dsg any good for towing

Featured Replies

Is a dsg any good for towing or are we better sticking to a manual ?

I have a DSG equipped Octavia and find I have no problem with towing my caravan. It does change up and down the box quite a bit but I think that is for the good as it minimises the strain on the dual mass flywheel by keeping the revs higher. My only reservation is with manoeuvring, especially in reverse where I feel it can be a bit clumsy and I would do a better job with a manual and conventional clutch.

This is one of the occasions where the wet multi-plate 6 speed box could be better than the 7 speed dry plated clutch.

I have towed a few times a mix of trailers up to and incl a 3500kg 14' IW.

On the flat mind.

I find the dry DSG excellent.

It obviously senses the greater loading/drag and keeps the gears down and the revs comensurately elevated, but just sensibily.

Me being on the flat it does not hunt, that I have ever noticed.

But it is a chunt to reverse, anywhere remotely akward leastwise.
