Protecting alloys

Featured Replies

I'm after some opinions.

If you got a new car with standard alloys, what would you do to protect them from getting grubby? You know - all that crap that sticks inside the alloy - brake dust and stuff that builds up and damages the lacquer coat leading to corrosion scabs.

At first, I was thinking I would spray some more lacquer as I recently done to my other fabia - the lacquer coat inside the alloy looks woefully minimal.

Just now I had one of those "aha!" moments - what about silicone spay or ptfe spray to stop the dust sticking in the first place?

Any thoughts/suggestions/tips?

Not sure about silicone spray but I find collinite 845 insulator wax is tremendous on wheels. Really tough hi-temp wax that applies like butter and buffs off incredibly easily. With regular washing this gives great protection against break dust and other muck.

For clean up prior to application of 845 (after a really good wash) CarPro IronX and TarX will give a great decontaminationyou basically spray on and with IronX for example all the metal fallout that is impossible to wash off turns purple and is dissolved away, you could then clay the wheels for the ultimate clean finish, I would suggest Bilt Hamber Medium as you only need water for lube.

Having done the above prep you should get great longevity out of the 845 wax and easy maintenance cleaning Inbetween big detailing sessions.

My vRS Gigaro's were really poorly finished inside the alloys.

My favourite is Gtechniq C5 coating ;)

Collinate 845 is great and easy to use.

I haven't tried the Collinite 845 on wheels, but it's been on my car nearly twelve months, and it's still looking good and shiny.

I think 12 months out of a wax in the UK would be mighty optimistic, no doubt your summers put the hi temp properties under scrutiny though.

Yup generally Collinite does good wax for the money it is hard to look past 845 and 476s double coat has a huge following. Haven't tried the marque d'elegance wax but I'd wager that's good too.

I know gtechniq is popular but I was always put off by the fact there promo videos all see the cars being prepped in laboratory style conditions, certainly not repeatable outside my house.
