Rear door opening whilst driving!

Featured Replies

Yup, you read that right.

Yesterday. Shopping. Returned to the car and opened the rear offside door to put stuff in.

Closed the door and drove off.

No indication on the MFD that the door was not closed properly and interior lights all off.

I drove down a rough old bit of road with quite severe ripples in the surface and the car was shuddering in response.

The next thing I know is a bong, the interior lights come on, followed by wind noise by my right ear.

It turns out the rear offside door was open. Not just on the safety catch, but open by about an inch!

I am absolutely certain that the door was shut properly at the start of the journey, so how has it come open?

Has anyone else come across the same?

It's booked into the dealer to check this Friday but I'm guessing it's going to be "we couldn't find anything wrong" or "you must not have shut the door properly"

We'll see...

wow! Right, my first thought is that the cars sensors thought there was something more serious about to happen, and unlocked the doors.

There is a two stage catch on the doors. In both stages the door should be held. In the first stage it is held at about 20mm and in the second stage it fully closed. It's possible that the door just wasn't quite closed far enough so it bumped open and caught on the first stage.

Had an odd one in the Fabia MC the other week but gear selection. At a standstill, selected first and started to drive away and then bang and I mean a right bang; it jumped out of gear :wonder:

Positive it was in gear properly, clutch out fully when it jumped and registering 1 or change up on the computer gear indicator. Not happened since either very odd.

Doors though no issue other than the boot on Monster number 1 which had loose hinges a couple of times, resulting in the door catching the bumper.

Hope you haven't got the equivalent of a dc-10 :giggle:

It was possible to close and "lock" the cargo door when in fact it wasn't locked or latched at all.

Because it opens outwards, to insure more cargo can be carried, it was a disastrous fault for several aircraft.

Seriously, i've had instances with the boot where it says it is closed on the MFD but after driving for a short while it has bounced onto the "second catch" and the MFd says it is open.

I'd have expected it popping from one to the other (due to the way the car pressurises) but to open all the way, you've not got Clarksons rover sd1?

Mine did actually open all the way on my first Yeti!  it only happened once and I assumed I just hadn't shut it properly.  never happened again, but it taught me to pay attention to the dash.

Lee, plausible but that safety feature only releases the auto locking doesn't it? I'm sure it doesn't actually open the doors

Did it catch on the second stage safety latch or, like mine, come fully open?

Fully closed yes - latched no. If you had pushed the door from the outside it would have latched. If you had pushed from the inside it would have opened a little and caught on the first stage latch.

I'm assuming they greased the mechanism, so that it is either fully latched or will immediately and visibly pop open to the first stage latch, putting the warning light on.

They need to as although the door will not fully open, it would be a weakness in the case of an accident.

Going to the dealer tomorrow but I tend to agree with your comment about lubrication.

If the lock mechanism is dry it isn't going to operate as it should.

I could lube it but I want them to check it first.

Well.

Took it to the dealer yesterday.

Not wanting to be without it for the whole day I asked them to give the lock mechanism a lube and check it was operating correctly, so what did they do first?

Plug the car into the diagnostics.

Anyway, I spent 1 1/2 hrs drinking their coffee and chatting to the sales manager.

Very tempted by the new Octavia vRS estate, but I resisted, just.

The door does seem to shut more easily and more quietly so I'll guess it's sorted. :)

Diagnostic plug in is routine for any visit at most dealers and would show errors with the central locking - maybe lock position not correct?

Yes those new Octy III vRS are quite nice to say the least; could quite fancy a hatch version myself but a little on the large side and not very practical

Should also add as far as I can tell Skoda have yet to produce a rim that matches their recommendation for winter tyres for the vRS and going by other VAG brands that use the same size winter rims, if and when they do, you could be looking at about 1.2k for a set fitted with say Conti winter tyres :bandit:

Oh hope the door is now resolved getting back to topic.
