Just purchased 11 plate fabia vrs, poor mpg, is this normal.

If when you start the car in the morning, it still says 32mpg before you've started, its on trip 2 - press the "OK" button on the bottom of the stalk to get the current trip mpg (not the once since it was last reset which could be 2 or 3000 miles).

  • I get about 45mpg (on the computer) on the way into work and about 39mpg on the way home.... I imagine you can guess why...!

  • All sorted changed plugs and drained oil put fuchs in it and filled up with tesco momentum and now getting 46mpg. Plugs wur goosed to say the least.

  • I average 45, can get into the 50's if I try.... how do you drive? if you aviod braking by reading the road ahead, and back off early you will see vast improvements... town driving will not give good

eg. Consumption 2, Consumption 1. Both were re-set/set to Zero at start of a return trip, with up hills.

(last picture was the Average showing before resetting after an easy run going the 16 miles from cold.

flat and down hill towards the sea, always easier on fuel in a Twincharger, when doing below 2400 rpm.)

*No matter what the Maxi Dot shows, only fuel actually used for the tank full really tells the true story.*

I've got a 61 plate with 14K on the clock. I would consistently get around 40-45mpg on longer trips in the warmer weather, average 37ish. All based on the cars read out.

Whilst on the subject, 12 plate; 43k on the clock - between 40 and 42mpg normally but I do a lot of driving to Germany and back..

Reset it today and tried it drove sensible 60mph and yet again 32.7mpg phoned skoda about it said there computer systems down and said never heard of any problems with recalls in the car or mpg problems but said will get back to me wen computer up running.

Used basicly half tank fuel in 135/140 miles

You really need to put fuel in again to know how much you used, the Fuel Gauge is not linear.

If brimmed it might not drop in 80-100 miles, then down to showing half quite quickly, then it drops slowly.

Goes to the Red Reserve,

then light on and you only get in 40 Litres, other times shows 40 miles Range and takes 50+Litres in.

what 'Range' shows now, ?

if half a tank was used and doing 32 Average then maybe shows. 160 mile Range.

Can be good for 200 miles plus.

(When its been showing say 42-45 mpg on the Average, you fill and it shows a range of 400 miles.)

Have you Zeroed 'Consumption 1', & 'Consumption 2' to see what you get on the next run.?

Mine only averaged 32mpg over 11k miles. I was quite heavy with the right foot in it though. I expect it would have improved with mileage but i got so jacked with it never getting anywhere near the 45mpg claimed that i sold it for a diesel octavia vRS

To average 32 MPG over 11k, there must have been often where you were getting well into the 40's on some trips,

because i would imagine you had times of 25 mpg and less, short trips, first miles of each trip from cold etc,

and times where you were taking advantage of the performance.

22-25 is not uncommon if knocking on.

How is the Diesel vRS doing for miles covered per tankful?

george

I find mine reasonably linear, oddly enough - 1/8th of a tank doing 45-50 miles (almost 400 to a tank - more if I vent it on filling before a long journey).

I can, conversely, get well under 300 from a tank if only running around locally.

I understand wanting better consumption but as per my previous you can't really buy a car and expect to get overly close to the claimed combined mileage even when driving Miss Daisy, as a rule of thumb I tend to subtract 10mpg from claimed and expect that is fair real world combined.

If however you buy a sporty petrol with two flavours of forced induction and punt it regularly I would say 32mpg avg is not bad, I fancy a lot of other warm and hot hatches would be worse.

If you try to hypermile or as best as is possible hypermile in a 1.4tsi with DSG then for me most should see 45mpg and variance from that will come down to the geography of where you drive, your own ability to eek the mpg out of your car and any subtle differences between the engines. I reckon if you can't beat 40mpg then there's a fair chance the car needs looking at.

Ps not a dig at Pipsy, just referencing the 32mpg when heavy right foot

I average 42mpg (checked when filling up) and I drive 15 miles each way to work and back on mostly A roads.

I do redline it sometimes when someone needs to be shown what there trying to mess with, but mostly I am doing 50-60mph on the open roads with a bit of slower driving at either end of the journey.

Mine is a 2010 model with 18000 miles on the clock and Sainsburys Super Unleaded in the tank.

That bit affects my economy, too.  :giggle:

It's a simple math's equation

IF RF = PB then MPG <45 ....typically followed by a sad smiley I believe when one wants to be 100% correct.

The fuel computer is definately non-linear, bad mpg in the mid range, better in the top and bottom on the range, most odd.

Over 40 mpg is no problem at all if the engine is in good condition, you are not doing short journey with lots of stop start ie less than 10 mile journeys and driving predictively ie not using the brakes.

Filled my Fabia VRS in Worcester yesterday morning, vented the tank whilst filling (pressing the air valve on the forward side of the filler neck) and probably had about 50 litres in the tank.   Drove 125 miles to West Wales.  Computer range went from 300 miles to 440 miles plus I covered the 125 miles.

Using the DSG is natuarally to me having had four of them, two wets, two drys.  Using paddle/tiptronic to change up early on the flats or downward slopes. Going in to Sports mode in to corners which require braking ie using engine braking rather than foot braking.  Did the same on the way home.  Distance covered 257 miles, did a couple of short journeys this morning ie a mile or so which it hates, range left on the computer 255 miles. Fuel gauge reads about 5/8 th fuel.  With vented filling fuel gauge was only just off the 8/8th after doing the 125 miles.

Car was just services last week by the wonderful Savilles garage at 40K miles, new air filter and spark plugs seem to have perked it up regaing 5 or 10 hp it feels and a couple of mpg.  The Fabia VRS, if driving thoughtfully, can do exactly what it was designed to do ie 45 mpg in mixed driving, over 50 mpg on A road at quickish pace little to no braking.  Marvellous machine IMO.   If doing urban driving I use the Fabia HTP if possible as VRS does not like short journeys as it takes much longer to warm up and uses much more fuel in stop start than HTP despite being more fun.

The fuel computer is definately non-linear, bad mpg in the mid range, better in the top and bottom on the range, most odd.

Totally agree there - many a time I end a journey with more miles range than I started with...and likewise I can use up 30 miles of fuel in under 2 if need be ;)

I think the plugs have a particularly hard time in the twincharge and are key to maintaining good performance.  Air filter worth changing at least two yearly and 40K miles if not more regularly.

I too have a very high opinion of Savilles Garage. Excellent service, friendly and honest. Makes me want to stick with Skoda.

Its a fair shout Sparkly, I just was quite disappointed with the MPG of the thing. I found you really had to drive it with kid gloves to get anything half respectful out if it, also it barely ever bettered 300 miles from a tank regardless of the type of fuel or how it was driven. I even found on longer runs at motorway speeds despite the long 7th gear getting beyond 37-38mpg was v hard, 34/35 being a reasonable average for a half sensible longer journey.

By comparison my diesel Octy vRS will average 46-48 on the same run being driven in much the same way and rarely delivers less than 42 on any half reasonable run regardless how its driven. And yes the Octy has a slightly bigger tank but it will almost certainly get mid to late 400's from a tank even when ragged/driven short distances alot.

having had both cars its also fair to say that once up to speed its not a great deal slower either; in fact at higher motorway speeds i'd say the CR170 pulls a bit better and doesnt feel flat like the twincharger did. I found it sometimes betrayed its small capacity force inducted roots. Lots of torque and decent gearing make the CR a very good motorway car if not the most exciting but as is the case with most half powerful CR diesels they dont often feel as quick as they are with very deceptive linear power delivery.

There is nothing in the performance stakes that the Octavia VRS diesel is that close to the Fabia 2 VRS (except the top speed it eventually achieves many many secs later).

I don't know if my trip computer is just way out or what but i've just had a "friday evening" drive home, manual, back lanes and B roads, redlines and of course only upto 66mph! and still got a nice 46.3mpg over 17 miles!

I filled up and brimmed,

then I used an indicated 4 gallons in 110 miles this morning (it showed as 27 MPG average or so.)

then through the average speed cameras and for 5 miles of mostly down hill it was using it at the rate of an indicated 63 miles to the gallon.

Went into brim it, and it took only 14 litres.

goosed in what way?

there have been issues of the electrode disintegrating due to old software and sometime followed by the dreaded oil use

£50 of V-power gets me around 300-320 miles with combined driving.

That's my real world test :-)

Not great but it's liveable.
