MPG at 70mph?

Featured Replies

Just wondering what sort of mpg i should be expecting sitting on a motorway/duel carrageway at 70mph?

I had the vrs two days until the turbo gave up, and now i have recieved it back from the place i bought it from (They fixed it under warrenty) im struggling to see the current mpg counter go above 50mpg whilst sitting at 70mph?

Is this right, i was expecting a little more with it having a 6 speed box, or am i expecting too much having recently moved over from a 1.4tdi 9n polo.

cheers

Slow down a tad lol.

I set cruise control at 64 tge other day and kept it tgere all the way from bristol to huddersfield and I got an indicated 70mpg but I have a remap and rest is std.

Just got 68 mpg on 35mile trip home from work just now sat at 1700 ish rpm

Depends on the gradient of the road. If it isn't that flat you will notice a decline in mpg. 50 doesn't sound too bad from 70 mph. I get a similar figure myself.

Same around the 50 mark doing 70 usually about 51/52

50mpg is probably the actual mpg, so perhaps you just have a very accurate gauge?

If I pottle along at 70mph, even with my mods/big injectors, my gauge will read over 60mpg, but the fuel checks show it to be nearer 48-50.

I always re-set the ECU after any engine work, whether filters or oil changes etc.

Switch OFF everything electrical. Disconnect the negative battery terminal and leave for 30 minutes.

Re-connect the battery and WITHOUT switching anything on or touching any pedals, restart and leave to idle for 30 minutes.

Then see the difference.

DB.

Mine gets anywhere between 42 & 52 (on the dash) depending on the gradient, NEVER more.

I personally think this is a little low but she is due a service next month, I do have a goosed SMIC I believe (or at least the connection to the pipe) and it's got about 12 months worth of dirt on her so can't moan too much :giggle: She is also sat at <100K so not even run in yet :)

ah okay, I just wanted to query as i didnt even have the car two days before it broke so i didnt get a chance to see what it was like with the original turbo properly... Ive used it for just over 1 week now with this new turbo so i wanted to compare my results with the rest of you guys.

Should i be changing the oil after a new turbo is fitted after so many miles? or just carry on with service intervals?

Yes change the oil if it hasn't been changed when the turbo was replaced!! My on board computer is pretty on the spot with actual mpg and usually is about 1mpg lower than what it is. On average over 30k I'd say I get 50mpg per tank, about 600 miles

Mine reads somewhere between 50-52 at 70mph. 10mph less and it gets towards 60mpg

I get about 52mpg depends on my load.

Thankfully VW/skoda/audi are pretty good at thinking about gear ratio's and power bands.

70mph in 6th is 1900rpm which is pretty much peak torque so the car doesn't have to work hard.

I get better MPG in 5th doing 60mph or less though than in 6th.
I dont see the point in 6th until your past 60mph just makes the car struggle.

Should i be changing the oil after a new turbo is fitted after so many miles? or just carry on with service intervals?

The oil should have been changed when the new turbo was fitted, you don't need to change it again until the normal service interval otherwise.

There's no such thing as 'running-in' bearings, any metal to metal contact would be catastrophic, bearings 'float' on an oil film.

Only new camgear or piston rings require running-in after replacement.

60-65 in 5th is better for me

when i went to castle combe travelling @ 70 mph i had the best of 71-73 mpg on the computer just over 2 k rpm. travelling from wales. on one trip from teeside back to wales i managed 58 mpg @ 70 mph back in february. its all on the traffic flow, weather conditions, full tank of fuel.

I get at/around 50 mpg. At any speed/ condition .

Average is 55 mpg unless the engine is cold.I hate it first thing on a morning when i cant boot it cause it eats fuel ha ha
