1.2tsi camchain rattle

Featured Replies

2011 Octavia 1.2tsi estate now 20 months old 34,000 miles, on variable servicing, first service 18,600 miles next not due for another 2,500 miles.

I've noticed that when the engine is stood a while, when its restarted, the camchain rattles for about 2 seconds then goes quiet when presumably the hydraulic tensioner pressurises. Its not super loud, but grates on the ears when I hear it.

Is this normal, or is it another "we have a problem"? Is the tensioner normally slack when starting the car?

Must say oil doesnt look great although the service indicator seems happy. As its still well within warranty, I daren't go changing the oil myself.

Get it looked at under warranty.

I'm getting nowhere with this.

I asked my dealer to check this during its variable interval service in December, but because they filled the car with the wrong oil (cheap 502 instead of 504/507 spec) and the trauma of resolving that, it was forgotten about.

In May I booked it in under warranty to look specifically at this camchain rattle. They reported to me that their technician had checked the Skoda database and said the car was built after the known camchain issues were resolved. My son told me that they told him the tech had heard the rattle, but this is apparently normal as the oil falls to the bottom of the engine when its stood and it takes a few seconds to get back to the top of the engine when you start it !!!

Furthermore, the dealer refused point blank to put in writing what they had or not found to me, saying its all put on the computer.

Since then its getting that bad that random people notice it and ask if there is something wrong with the engine.

I found TPI 2026513 which acknowledges the streched camchain issue - but I dont know the engine no. and if it applies.

Who do I email in Skoda UK to escalate the issue?
