2.0 TDI 110KW or 2.0 TSI 150KW for towing

Featured Replies

Hi,

I'm looking to order a Superb. Currently I drive MK3 110 TDI (manual) for 7 years now. I drive 18-19000 km yearly, 6000 of which I tow a caravan (1300kg). I'm very happy with the current engine, but I can't order a car with the same engine due to weight limit of total mass combined with my caravan. There are only two engines which fits the weight - 1.5 or 2.0 tsi 150kw. 1.5 is out of scope for towing. I have no doubt, that 2.0 TSI will tow very well, maybe even better than TDI. But I'm worried about fuel consumption. When towing only actually. My current TDI consumes 9L/100km on average. Does anyone has any experience towing a caravan woth 2.0 TSI 150 KW? What fuel consumption can I expect when towing? Are there any reliability issues? TDI for example is super reliable from my experience.

Thank you

I wouldn't compare a TDI from many years ago to one equipped to euro6e emissions.   You are comparing a simple engine with basic emissions equipment to one with new sensitive stuff

The new ones have lots of extra complicated and possibly unreliable emissions equipment added on, whose longevity is not yet known.

You need to look at extra cost of TDI, and potential repair costs, which might be lot more than extra cost of fuel

Hi, thanks. The current tdi engine is still the same ea288 as my 2018 version. Ok, it's called ea288 evo now, but it's almost identical. As far as I know there are no new components to go wrong. Reliability wise, I'm curious about 2.0 TSI. There's a very little info about 204 ps engine. Seems like a rare engine. Therefore, can't find more info concerning towing consumption too.

Hi,

I have a 2019 Skoda Octavia 1.5 TSI, 150HP, towing a 1100kg caravan. The average fuel consumption is between 10 and 11L/100km on mixed roads. On highways in France and Belgium, it reduces to 9L/100km at a 90km/h target speed. I always thought diesel cars consume much less than I do.

I know this is a few months behind and you may already have made a choice but the 2.0TSi EA888 EVO4 204PS is just a slightly tweaked version of the 2.0TSi EA888 EVO4 190PS which has been widely used for a few years now across VAG. It's had 14PS power increase for the latest models but the peak toque remains the same as the 190PS at 320NM, the torque drop off is slightly delayed to gain the extra power so the only slight difference is felt approaching 5000rpm .
