ASZ engine code?

Featured Replies

I have a vrs and I apologise in advance if it's been asked before but is the td130 vrs engine code a ASZ? As I'm looking to buy a hybrid turbo from someone on here that can source them, is £350 good for a hybrid turbo?

Two codes ASZ or BLT being the later engine.

Looks like you have two posts on same subject??

Yeah I have the ASZ engine, what's better? Blt or ASZ and I know my phone lagged out, can I delete one or can a admistrator?

You are actually buying a hybrid for £350 or are wanting to buy one?

I am buying one

Is this not a good price?

What sort of hybrid is it?

  • Author

Erm it's from someone on here, think it's like a pd150 I'm not actually too sure

  • Author

He said it will be based on a garret out a pd170 passat

I saw the thread you mean. It is a really good price he offers, but just seems to good to be true.

Hmm apparently they get bored out to make a direct replacement, how much would I pay to get my pd130 turbo hybrid'd?

Their is a pd170 as fitted to the early octy vrs tdi. Uses a gt1749vc on transverse engines. Later changed to cr170. Being a 16v it doesn't mate to the. 8v head.

Be interesting to hear about the hybrid details. Does he transfer the cha, turbine and compressor? Or just the compressor?

This is his reply

'most likely it will be based on Garrett GT1749VC internals (Passat PD170) not sure about the donor turbo but if there were Garrett turbos in ASZ engines it will most likely be bored out stock Garrett and the 1749vc internals put in. I will get the details whenever you are ready to place an order.'

by these you mean the GT1749VC hybrids ? so once again to explain in most cases the hybrid is based on stock housing which is bored out or modified as required and GT1749VC (PD170) internals. To be honest I don't know the exact measurements however you should be able to find it on Garrett's website for Gt1749vc

ok this is info from darkside website I believe:

"GTB1749VM (GT1749VC) 2,0TDI 170hp

Compressor

inducer/exducer: 36.4 / 49mm

A/R: 0.42

Turbine

exducer/inducer: 43 / 38mm

A/R: 0.62

"

These are the details on the hybrid, I don't really know anything about turbos, this any good for a pd130?

Ok here goes....

Essentially the manufacturers take the casing of a standard PD130 or PD150 - Garrett units off a Golf though as the KKK units fitted as standard to a Fabia can't really be hybridised - and they put the bigger better internals from a bigger better turbo inside.

Outer from one unit & inners from another = a hybrid.

They should also then improve everything else (bearings, shafts, seals etc) to deal with the stronger boost levels.

The variations are pretty much endless - as you have already found out.

Xman seems to have found a decent manufacturer creating him whatever turbos he needs.

However it's a risky game. Yes the turbo has a warranty but you run the big risk of getting into a he said she said blame loop if something does go wrong.

Potentially the turbo manufacturer would blame the garage that did the fitment and mapping while the garage will blame the turbo....

Sometimes it's better to bite the bullet and go to someone like Darkside and get them to do the who kit and caboodle.

You'll pay for it of course but you'd sleep much sounder at night knowing you have much greater come back should anything go wrong

And to answer your question in post #3 the BLT engine has a few more reports of failures (cracked heads & pistons) while I've not heard of any issues with the ASZ.

That said its a pretty redundant question as unless you plan to do an engine swap on your car or sell your car and buy a later one your stuck with your ASZ engine :)

Okay thanks for the reply and info :) what would you be paying for a darkside turbo? Or jabbasport as I've emailed them but no reply,

The "budget" darkside kit is £1500

http://www.darksidedevelopments.co.uk/products/darkside-1-9-2-0-tdi-budget-turbo-kit-inc-fitting-and-mapping.html

But it does include a new decat down pipe, upgraded oil return pipe, oil and oil filter change and fitting and remapping.

For piece of mind with any hybrid you'd also probably need a new stronger clutch and a front mount intercooler too.

Remember that these companies are garages and are more likely to be getting their hands dirty than sat waiting for mail enquiries so maybe pick up the phone on Monday.

Hmm that is a fair amount! I already have a front mount, was looking into a clutch also, could I not just buy a hybrid turbo and fit it, or do I cneed anything else? Yeah that's a pretty good point tbf, thanks :)

You could of course use just turbo and bolt it on, however without more work there'd be very little point.

A hybrid turbo on a standard turbo map with just give standard turbo map performance, meaning you've spent £350 and achieved nothing.

You'll need a remap to get the extra performance out of the bigger better turbo.

And while you while you are there you can always ask them to map in maximum power but limit torque to save your clutch.

  • Author

Right that's good then, what bhp should I be running with a hybrid, decat and stage 1 map?

~200-220bhp dependant on turbo

  • Author

Ah more than expected :)What kind of torque can a standard clutch take 250-300?

  • 2 weeks later...

300 is considered the general limit for the standard one
