Ok, so I finally managed to unscrew the bulb and its holder from the the low beam headlight housing, but the next stupid question is: how do you actually get the bulb out of the part you remove, the bit still connected to the wiring?

 

Do you twist? Or pull it straight out? Neither worked at "light-ish" pressures, and I didn't want to take the wrong approach too forcefully.

If memory serves then you pull, it's a good tight fit so a little wiggle might be needed, you can give the bulb a wiggle too

Thanks, I'll try giving the bulb a "pull" as well.

I've just bought some 'HID' upgrade lights as a set from halford which include the blue 501 side lights as the set , will be fitting this weekend so hopefully they are good, the headlight bulbs claim to be 120% brighter like most of the phillips and other brands that they sell so should be interesting. 

Have already changed the boot lid lights to super bright LED's and those are much better.
