Car still refusing to start

Featured Replies

Okay so its still not firing properly. Ive replaced the camshaft sensor. To no avail

Only error code is "camshaft position sensor - signal implausible"

After taking the timing cover off, ive noticed that the cam sprocket is adjusted so that the sprocket is spun clockwise, the bolts are to the left of the slots. I assumed these are normally central. And the car does have a rough idle when i unplug the camshaft sensor and start it, by means of vibration in the cabin.

I was thinking, if this has moved, is it enough movement to make it not start? Dont want to touch timing if i dont have to do. The bolts were nice and tight, but it does look like it was once in a different position

Help please :)

Luke

They will normally end up in a different position after a cambelt change. However as long as its timed up then the position is irrelevant.

A VCDS check on block 4 position 4 in engine will tell you if the timing is out, the torsion value should be somewhere around 0 degrees, some engines prefer -1 degrees iirc.

Is the wheel still attached on he back of the pulley? Cambelt timing ok? Does the rev counter move when you turn it over?

If the timing has slipped it would make it very difficult to start, PD's need to very accurately timed indeed. The range of adjustment on the cam sprocket amounts to about a 'tooth' on the cambelt, having it at one extreme suggests that it's about half a tooth out, when and where was the last cambelt change done?

However all this doesn't rule out the possibility that you have a wiring loom fault so rule out the timing issue first then check the CPS wiring for internal breakdown due to vibration.

Edit: I've just noticed that you have quite an aggressive remap, it's possible that the timing was altered to suit injection timing during the remap.

I would have said my map isn't that aggressive, its tamed down to help my clutch live a little longer. Darkside timed the engine up

last for me. my question about timing was is it common for it not to start if it moves right over on that adjustment?

cps wiring? im guessing means cam position sensor? the short wire is obv new due to the new sensor, connections seem fine and not corroded. I pulled back the loom tape to check the wiring and all seems fine to the untrained eye.

all still attached yes, rev counter moves. as I said, car will fire without the cam sensor plugged in, but runs in limp mode. doesn't sound knocky or anything, just the cabin vibration to note

need someone with vcds then!

After changing one of my cam belts I found the engine would not start, after adjusting the sprocket slightly I got it to start, then with VCDS I adjusted the sprocket very carefully to set the measuring blocks at 0.0.

did it just turn over? but not fire?

Sounds like you need to check the engine timing, i'd fit the locking tools in (you dont need to strip everything down to do that) and see where the static timing is at.

Its going to have a new belt kit fitted today, as per my other post :(, so it'll all get checked then. Ive got the timing tools to check its aligned myself aswell. Just incase. Not having much luck lately!
