Another week!?

Was thinking can I make into November ,,,,,,,,,,,,

Ha I refurbed my wheels the other week and measured tread was at 1.3mm thought meh shud be fine only got it changed yesterday

Is it still £60 and 3 points per baldy below 1.6mm?

No. It's £100 now.

I'm attempting to push two out to November :)

Still got 2 Conti SC2's that were factory fitted - 31k miles on the rear and just over 11k miles on the front.

Not at the limit yet, but the weather is getting worse....just a few more weeks :)

Knowing how much tyres lose grip/ability to disperse water as the tread depth decreases I usually change mine at about 2.5mm.

I am a bit fanatical about tyres. After all they are the only thing in contact with the road.

Well your suspension does more to keep you in contact. Tyres second to suspension. Worn shocks are more dangerous than worn tyres.

Maybe so but the suspension components aren't actually in contact with the road surface in the same way as a tyre.

Makes me feel better, got 14.5k out of my fronts. Was pretty much down to the indicator when I swapped. Now got Conti SC5's on the front.

Tyre tread depth on road tyres is all about wet grip. If the tyres can't shift enough water the car will lose grip, increasing braking distances on even perfectly straight, flat roads. I struggle to see how the best shocks in the world would make any difference? On a rally car drving off-road quite possibly, but on a road car on a motorway?

My SC2s are just under 3 mm after 7k, but now that i have the "thrash it everywhere" year gone, i'm gonna hold out to November if possible and throw on the CWTs. Saying that, its the first week of October and the temperature is 18 degrees c. Bloody global warming! I'll probably stick with that plan all the same and just buy new summers at the start of next year....

I see this has created much debate. Suspension does keep you in contact with the road I agree, my point was the physical contact with the road is the small contact patch of the tyre. If look at tyre tests on the internet from someone like continental who pits their tyre against a copy of their tyre in the same set of circumstances you will see what I was trying to get at. Good tyres on your car are very important. Neglect them at your own risk.

Shocks don't wear really, they usually just snap. The shock absorber is just a spring after all. Now the damper is a different matter. A worn damper will cause you issues.
