More problems with Canon stuff

Featured Replies

Following the thread about Canon A70 cameras lasting about 2 years, my Canon MP390 all-in-one printer/scanner/copier/fax has decided to throw a wobbly today. It's 14 months old, 2 months out of warranty.

The printer part works fine. As does the copier function. I never use the fax bit. But the scanner won't work. I've uninstalled and reinstalled the drivers and the associated software (and done several restarts) but the PC still believes there is no scanner attached.

I did install the MP390 on a friend's laptop the other day so he could print off a letter, but that shouldn't affect it when I plug it back into my own machine, should it?

Any ideas?

It might do, have you plugged it back into the same USB port that it was in previously.

Look in device manager to see if you have any devices with a yellow ! on them. Also look for a yellow ? other devices as it may not be installed properly.

From memory I used a different cable so I wouldn't have to fiddle around at the inaccessible back of my machine.

Device manager looks OK.

One more route to attempt now - a further uninstall and reinstall in a different order, now I've found the destruction manual. Fingers crossed...

Well, it's now recognised in the Scanners and Cameras bit in XP Control Panel. But it still won't scan.

Going to leave it for tonight and then take a sledgehammer to it in the morning

In fact it won't even print now.:mad::mad:

Give Canon a call maybe? It could be a known issue?

MP390  . Mine's never worked properly since i went to XP, usually prints half a page. I've tried it with 2 different computers (XP) and same both times. Canon haven't got a clue, I've downloaded new drivers and all sorts as they advise, no change, and their Engineer never showed up. The seller (The on-line part of a large high street retailer) blames it on Canon and won't refund as it was after 28 days...

Mine's been fine from new until this. I need to try it on a different machine. When time permits...

Good Luck Cheeky  . I'm waiting on a small claims court date...

The seller (The on-line part of a large high street retailer) blames it on Canon and won't refund as it was after 28 days...

They can't do that. Quote the Sale of Goods Act at them. The goods have to be of merchantable quality and fit for their purpose. If they only last a short period they aint either and no amount of rubbish like "it isn't our policy to refund after 28 days, you will have to take it up with the makers" makes any difference. It is the seller's contractual responsibility not the manufacturers. Insist that they fix or give you your money back.

Did you buy it with a credit card? If so and if it cost over

Peterc10, thanks. The problem i have is that this particular chain, who will remain nameless but can be seen on TV fronted by two annoying biffers, claims that after 28 days the warranty is by Canon, and is their responsibility to fix it. Canon haven't. I got Trading Standards involved and that didn't shift them either. I've now put in a court claim which they are apparently defending so that should be interesting. I'll check out the CC angle, thanks for that.

They don't want to curry favour then?

Will be interested to see what defence they put up - totally at odds with contract law - you have a contract with them and not Canon. You will be in the small claims court so will be informal.

The Section of the Consumer Credit Act (1974) to quote is 75(1). I have a complete copy of this Act in pdf format. If you want a copy PM me with your email address and I will email (its about 375kb but can't cut and paste bit cos its in pdf)

Suggest you write to the credit card company and tell them about the problems and the court case and that you hold them "jointly and sererally liable" under the Act and that you will be joining them in the court case unless they give you a refund. That normally does the trick and the credit card company can easily get it back off the supplier.
