Views on winter tyres

Featured Replies

It's that time of year again, after  suffering 'issues' last year and now having had the car lowered it's time for some winter tyres. My question is: does anyone have 17" winters on their Fabia?

Only reason I ask is that I have the original 17"s in the garage and thought it would be a cheaper option just to buy tyres, rather than wheels and tyres.

is anyone running 204/40/17 winters?

I'm getting a reasonable deal on a set of these.

It would be best to buy 16" steels on a 195/60/16 tyre as this means much cheaper tyres and a much better ride for winter conditions. Those tyres in your links however look very cheap but are they any good??. A quality 205/40/17 would be over £125.

My dad had a set on his Volvo T5R and swore by them

you mean 45 profile not 60? The 16s in the correct fitment are ridiculous price

195 55 15 are the cheapest and they fit fine.

If you are wanting 16 inch wheels then I think 205/45 16 are a better size. They are also fitted to the mk1 vRS and have a better selection.

Sharkrider and others have: http://www.briskoda.net/forums/topic/284982-bought-some-winter-wheels-and-tyres-now-to-paint-them-pics/

If you wan to stick with 17's then owners have bought 205/45 17. I know Sharkrider and others have done that. Nankang SV-2 are reconmended by him and others.

Others in the past have recommended Camskill who can supply already fitted on stealies. Its worth a look if nothing else.

A proper winter tyre on your set of existing 17's will be fine and saves buying another set of wheels.

Unless a 17" winter tyre alone, is as expensive as a 15" or 16" wheel/winter tyre combo, which I very much doubt.

No point spending more money then needed :)

Thats what I thought, then after I take the winters off I can re-spray the Trinity alloys.

Yes I run winter tyres on my Fabia VRS on the 17 inch rims and they worked very well last year.

Bought two full size matched alloy spares same as already on the car and put winter tyres on those rims.  When the time comes for it put those rims and tyres on an put the other two winter tyres on two of the summer rims and put the two summer tyre rims away for spring time.

You can get Nexen Winguard Sport for £53 each delivered from Openeo http://www.oponeo.co.uk/tyre-details/nexen-winguard-sport-205-40-r17-84-v-xl .

V rated for speed, C rated wet grip and good in snow etc.  South Korean not Chinese and general good reviews by users.

Saves your summer tyres for when they work best ie over 10C and are about half the price of good summer tyres (Mich PS3s work best for me).

Sunny rating.....  http://www.tyrereviews.co.uk/Tyre/Sunny/SN3830.htm

Wanli rating ....   http://www.tyrereviews.co.uk/Tyre/Wanli/Snowgrip-S1083.htm

as above , dont buy the sunny ones, the nexens are cheap and better !

I have hankook winters on my octy vrs on 17's and was really impressed by them last winter

Was pushing range rovers up hills covered in snow

What are people running on Octys?

I have a set of 17" Minerva winter tyres but no wheels to run them on. I'm not sure what to do with them.

Anyone got any ideas? I need to know whether to get a different set of wheels and tyres and sell these, or use these on a new set of 17s.

Problem is, I don't have a set of 17s, and every garage around here doesn't seem to want to fit tyres they didn't supply.

Advice?

What type of protection do you guys put on your alloys to protect them in winter? My alloys haven't got a single scratch on them and I would cry my eyes out if the winter weather damaged them. I've done the google search but id rather have your recommendations.

Choose either bilberry wheel wax or the gtecnik stuff and you won't go far wrong as far as initial protection is concerned. The key is to keep them clean through the winter with regular washes. I use bilberry wheel cleaner, spray on let it soak, jet wash off so you remove most of the crud using a contactless method, the respray with more bilberry cleaner and use a good quality soft non metalic wheel brush and a microfibre mit to get into all the crevicies and round the back of the spokes. Rinse off again with the jet wash then dry off with a mf cloth.

I run Nankang SV-2s on my Seat Cordoba, much much better than standard tires. Once went to rescue my girlfriend and my car was so much better than her Yaris on summers despite wider tires.

Have now put Viking (part of the Continental group) SnowTech's on the Yaris, looking forward to seeing how they are if we get some snow this year... GF certainly felt they were much better last year. Certainly look the part with additional treat on the edge of the side wall... should be very good at biting through snow in 150 width I think it is.

(Sorry to invade the forum... currently weighing up new car options and the Octavia and Superb have made the final list :P)

Just fitted winters on my Fabia yesterday, today hit loads of standing water at motorway speeds / country roads... no problemo!

If its any help and you find 16's are a lot cheaper tyre wise, I have a set of alloys cheap that suit the Fabia well :)
