What to look for when picking up new car

Featured Replies

Morning all.

After some advice from those of you that have already collected your cars, I am hoping to be picking the keys up to my mk3 vRS this week (Candy White, black pack, sunset glass, colour maxi-dot, Amundsen sat nav and full size spare)

Are there any areas that I need to be aware of/ pay particular attention too when picking the car up. This is the first new car I'm collecting and am aware I need to moderate my excitement and just taking the keys with checking it over.

Any help and advice is much appreciated.

Hope it's dry & sunny when you check it over. Other threads have highlighted paintwork issues, which seem to be more noticeable in sunlight. I checked mine thoroughly & found some sticky residue where the factory transport coverings had been. Once they were gone all appeared OK & since a good clean & polish no problems. I ordered spare wheel & when I checked a couple of things were missing from the toolkit (dealer soon replaced them).

Basically just be thorough & don't let them rush you checking it over inside & out.

Then enjoy your new car!!!

A Ford Focus CC I bought from new in 2007 was missing the locking wheel nut key.........a fact I didn't discover until I needed a puncture repaired.

Cost me £85 for a new one together with four new locking wheel nuts.

Check your glass as well. I've had mine less than two weeks and today when applying glass polish found a set of 6-7 very deep scratches on my drivers side rear door window!

As I haven't been anywhere for them to happen they must have happened during delivery/PDI and look just like when an ice scraper is used that has a ragged edge! I'm calling the dealer in the morning.

Mine also has a slight paint imperfection down by the passenger side rear wheelarch, it is on the piece of plastic/vinyl "armour" just infront of the arch... a lighter shaded "blotch". I'm not worried about that as it's only noticeable if you know it is there and are looking for it or up close when cleaning the car.

Following this! Hope mine will be ready by the end of the month

The most obvious things to check are bodywork - tiny dings caused by someone being clumsy when opening a door next to your car in the compound.

Crouch down, firstly at the rear and then at the front, and run your eye along the bodywork.

I've been buying cars from new since 1989 - don't assume that your new car hasn't been subject to some minimum wage muppet treating it with disdain.

Quite, but then again what comment do you expect from a merchant banker

Hi,

I picked mine up last week. Take a good look at the wheels, one of my front ones has a indent type mark from what i would presume has come from something holding the wheel when in transport. As i asked the dealer not to prep the car and that i will do it myself there was a few marks on the paints but easily came off by hand.

Cheers for your thoughts on this guys,

Am starting to become slightly frustrated, was really hoping to get the phone call from the dealer today letting me know it had arrived, but alas nothing so far, it was meant to arrive at the dealer, at the end of last week, and arrived in country the week before. Surely taking nearly two weeks from dock to dealer seems longer seems along time for me.

Cheers, that is a definitive checklist, have just had the call that my car has (finally) arrived at the dealer so will be heading over this afternoon to do the paperwork, hopefully be collecting it for the weekend.

Nice one, congrats pal.

Thanks for the list very useful when we pick up ours this Friday, did see a couple of things mentioned elsewhere if you are bothered about the badges

You won't get a radio code, and you don't need one as it is stored in the instrument cluster.

Hi, as I am expecting delivery around Nov 15th I have been reading this topic with much interest.

A question please. do you have to sign the paper work prior to inspecting the car?

if so, how does it affect your rights?

Best regards to all, George the old tynesider

You do not have to sign anything prior you have the possibility to check the car. Just ask if it was repaired and for the PDI. After that inspect the car from outside (have a digital camera with you!) without turning the engine on then continue inside running the engine. Continue with the 'On the road' phase and when you are satisfied sign all the papers/ make the complaint. Best to print the checklist mentioned above and follow that.

Dug this out as I'm collecting tomorrow!
