People who know nothing about their cars...

Featured Replies

Just a couple of amusing moments of watching people on the ferry to Zeebrugge the other week.

Some people really do know nothing about their cars!

One guy didn't know how to unlock his doors from inside his Jag X-Type to let his wife back in. He resorted to switching the engine off and removing the key to unlock the doors.

I sat and watched a guy apply headlight beam thingys to his Merc S-Class with Bi-xenon lights... pretty sure he could have set tourist mode or whatever Merc call it.

I also watched a guy apply the headlight beam thingys to his Toyota Avensis with projector style lights... that's fine you might say... however he stuck them in front of the full beam instead of the dipped beam!

And lastly a guy in a MK VI Golf left his windows down... so got back in turned the ignition on to put them back up... could have just pressed and held the lock button...

LOL

On the last point, I showed my boss how to do this on the touran he has owned for the last 8 years...

My boss discovered it from the other end when he couldn't understand why he kept going out to his Audi to find the boot and windows open.  Thats what happens when you keep the key in your back pocket...

P'ed him off no end when I showed him that if only he had bought an Octavia it would automatically shut the windows if it rained :giggle:

Is it the Octavia that also closes then windows automatically if you turn the wipers on constant? I can remember one car I had doing that but can't remember which one. I think it was my Octavia.

Don't think so no. Never had that happen.

As above though it does close the windows if they are left open, the car is locked and it rains.

SWMBO has had her 1 series for 2yr. Still doesn't know how to use the auto lights and wipers.

Also has absolutely no intention of ever learning either

A large number of drivers are just like SWMBO.

I'm in a minority that likes to know how EVERYTHING works. Just as irritating for some people.

I'm on ferries several times a year; there's about an evens chance of the trip being accompanied by an Audi or Vw with its alarm going off every few minutes (or at least until the battery is flattened).

Haha. Yeah that too!

Saw a guy in a Golf V with his owners manual out on the page about the alarm.

At least he bothered to look it up in the book. There's signs up everywhere 'Handbrake on' 'Switch Car Alarm Off'. So many people don't seem to bother... lazy buggars!

Ha. I'm the same. Also jus like then when I get into other people's cars.

I had lots of toys to play with in a brand new VW Touareg I used a few times!

My sister always believed that their Zafira didn't have fog lights, none at all. I went down the argument that it is a legal requirement to have it, and then asked for her keys and I would find it.

I found it. Her reaction was "Wow, I never knew what that button did"

SWMBO's Fiesta has a heated windscreen (as well as a back ...obviously !) & after nearly 2 years she still does not know which button operates which....

" Oh I just turn them both on..."   :giggle:

I must admit that the other half has still not quite grasped the auto wipers... "why aren't the wipers coming on?" Me: "because you've turned them on". Then: "why aren't the wipers turning off" Me: "because you now have them on constant". Lol

Haha. Love it! Not sure which switch does what so I'll just turn them all on.

But can be disabled in vcds and maxidot though.

I've done ours because of the lock trick thieving scroats use.

Trouble is it disables closing via the remote too. Rain closing still works.

Aren't there seperate options for the remote and door lock?

Worded something like:

Comfort closing via remote

Comfort closing via door lock

You can then tick/untick the ones you want to use or not?

I haven't really looked into that but have seen something along these lines.

Guy at work has a Peugeot 307 SW. I asked him if it had electric windows in the back. His reply, 'How do I know, I don't sit in the back'.

Fair point :D

Having any interest in cars and going on a car related forum is very small percentage of drivers.

Just done via maxidot for now.

Most people don't bother reading the manual I guess.

Over here it's common to get no manual or get one in Japanese as a most of our cars are second-hand Jap imports.

On the subject of foglights - SWMBO's car doesn't have them. Front or rear. I assumed there were a legal requirement but apparently not in 2002 on an NZ new car!

Owners regularly drive around with broken springs, dry dampers and failed ball joints/steering arms/wheel bearings so bad that the wheel wobbles. They don't hear or feel anything :(

You would also be amazed how many owners know that the steering wheel tilts, but don't realise the reach can be adjusted too.

Funny you mention that. It took me several months to realise the wheel in our Cordoba did this. I had tried before but due to lack of use by previous owner it was seized! Bit of elbow grease freed it off.

I was in halfords the other week when a woman walke over to the oils an starte looking in the book to ind which one she should buy.

She then pulled out her phone, called her partner (I guess) and asked him "what size engine is my car?"

How does anyone not know such information about their own car?

I'm more confused by the fact that she knew it needed oil if she didn't even know the engine size. :)

If you have a BMW it might not be so obvious what engine size you have -but surely the displacement isn't any indicator of the type and quantity of oil needed.

Halfords have a book with all the different engines and model years in to work out which you need, although that said they got it wrong for the fabia vrs tdi. No way am I putting in 5W30 which doesn't conform to 505 01.
