People who know nothing about their cars...

Featured Replies

I regularly see VAG owners let the fuel cap dangle, and sometimes ask them if they know what the slot in the fuel cap is for . Then there's insurance companies. My favourite one is one company asking if Furby had ABS and an immobiliser . One was even shocked to be told it's Thatham 2 . As for Halfrauds - I'd trust the cycle dept ,but NEVER the car parts spotted yoof lot- Skoda might have progressed from making cycles, but HALFRAUDS - pay peanuts, get monkeys. Then there was a local place I used to use for my MOT. They did ask where I went for a service and quoted me. Then they blew it . One told me that mine could be recoded for Variable servicing ,even though it's only ever had the service reminder reset on the trip ,and I remember one mastertech telling us that Furby MK 1is ONLY fixed .But then I've had that from a main dealer too .

Then I've had advisoried ( at least two) on MOT for low oil, although I meticicously maintain it between halfway and full .My suggestion is that like the AA bloke that came out to my daughter, they had forgotten that oil needs a finite time to return to the sump. I've had MOT advisories on low disk surface , a week after pad replacement. I found this odd as I mike my disks at pad replacement ,and it was midway . Same place told me a "heatshield" on the rear box was corroded. Exhaust placectold me that VAG fit two layer metal on boxes.

I had a service at a Natonal place just after I got car as mileage was high for first service (oilchange) and Skoda place had a long waiting list. Report was that they'd found trace leaks on the rear brake seals . I checked and found they'd not replaced the rear drum screws properly. One fell out when I removed rear wheel

So I'd submit there's a lot of garages knowing less about our cars than some owners.

So as well as owners not knowing about their cars, I'd suggest that a lot of garages know less about your car than they would make you think . And some of these are qualified to say your car is roadworthy.

I had a friend who was selling a Golf who knocked money off for the faulty windows as they all opened when the person held the door lock open.  I said to her that's entirely normal and they will all close when you hold the lock closed although I will never know if the buyer knew this and took advantage to get a discount or if they were similarly unaware.

The more worrying one is how few people realise that they don't have a spare wheel in their car and will only find out when they really need one, at work they spent a while taking apart the rear of a Ford Galaxy trying to find the spare wheel they assumed must be somewhere but of course there wasn't one.

Then again I will admit to still finding out little things about my car despite having had it for over three years now.  I was puzzled why the indicators weren't flashing when I locked the car then found the boot wasn't quite properly closed, when I made sure it was closed properly the indicators flashed as normal.

I was in a petrol station choosing a drink before paying for fuel

and a Ned (who I'd seen arrive and start fueling up a 2002 Corsa)

comes in while I was looking and starts to ask the clearly disinterested

asian till attendant (who was on the phone...) (But they are always on the phone aren't they?

Who the hell to as they never seem to speak to the person on the other end??)

But I digress, Ned says "Alright mate, do you sell oil?" till attendant nods toward oil

clearly on display which Ned had just walked straight past.... :dull:

And without a hint of irony,he then said to the till jockey "What one do I need for a Vauxhall?"

I genuinely LOL'd, some people shouldn't be allowed out on their own...
