Noticed a fluid leak on the drivers front side... what would it be?

Featured Replies

Hey guys,

Sorry to bother you, am trying to gauge the severity of a drip leak I have spotted... It's mostly clear watery liquid... a tiny bit greasy... not much odor but maybe smells a tiny bit like when you bleed a radiator in your house.

Here's a photo from Haynes manual with the source of the leak circled... I am pretty sure it's coming out of the u-shaped pipe, dripping onto the sill and then off onto the road.

Any ideas what this could be?

Clear'ish could be brake fluid as it's yellow, not somthing you could 100% answer on a forum.

Sure, not by colour or smell alone but hoping someone technical knows what that pipe is for!

what side's the air-con and power steering pumps on?

A/c etc is on that side, pretty sure unit 11 beside the pointed area is a/c pump.

Indeed, 11 is the air con compressor... the well for the power steering fluid in on the opposite side by the battery, so I would guess that the pump is on the opposite side too.

OK, so if that's the case, it could just be condensed water dripping down from the ac compressor, which would be normal. The oily texture could just be oil picked up along the way, which would also be fairly normal IMO

Looks like an air con pipe to me, the fluid could be condensation dripping from a cold pipe and collecting a bit of oil on the way. Sometimes dye will be added to air con gas to make leaks more visible, though obviously liquid refrigerant within the AC system will turn to gas as soon as it's exposed to the atmosphere.

Lee - the air con is on the right (close to the circle in the picture, the PAS is on the left corner behind the bumper/wheel arch liner.

The a/c usually drips from the bulkhead where the drain is.

And the powerd steering fluid is on the other side.

I will check the levels in the power steering well tomorrow just to make sure... I can feel through the pedals that there is plenty of fluid in the brakes and clutch, so that should hopefully rule out any more serious causes.

My air con has been broken with a gas leak for quite some time so hasn't been used for ages though, so bit confused as to why it would start dripping now.

Fuel filter / lines and coolant bottle/pipes are above that area

I just said that :p ;)

Not looked under mine much (it's doesn't break down) so was unsure what side what was on n what not :D

It took me time to post that as I was having a few problems.

Don't worry too much about your car not breaking down, it will do :) , even mine has broken down (twice) this year :(

It hasn't yet in ten years :D But yeah, the day will come :( That's not a lot for a Ford, you must have got a good one, rare as rocking horse **** good Fords are :D

FORD stands for "FIX OR REPAIR DAILY ", and " Found on road dead" . :giggle::sweat:

yes, yes and Lotus stands for lots of trouble,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,I can't be bothered TBH

Ferrous Oxide Rampaging Daily would be a better solution to the FORD acronym.

Sounds like problem solved here now then.
