New Superb with Towbar Preparation?

Featured Replies

I have placed an order for a new L&K Superb 170 DSG estate in Magnetic Brown and am looking at options for having a Towbar fitted. A local Towbar fitter has quoted me £472 for a Westfaila detachable bar with vehicle specific electrics and reprogramming electrics. I am wondering whether this is a better option than getting the Skoda Towbar preparation at £170 plus vat then paying for a local fitter to fit the bar.

My main concern is whether a local fitter electrics will be as good as the Factory Skoda fit.

I will be towing a small trailer or using a tow bar cycle carrier.

Dealer can retro fit..

Dealer can fit it once it comes in and you'll get the full warranty if done at PDI.

I know it's not much use now, but I'm certain there is an option to order the towbar and single electric wiring to be fitted completely at the factory

The towbar prep doesn't actually cover very much - it's the routing of (some) wires from the front to the back.  As I understand it it doesn't include the power line necessary for fridge power for a caravan.  Your quote is a good price - I was quoted £550 for the full works (including fridge line) until I mentioned I had towbar prep on my car - this then dropped to £500.

Make sure they reprogram correctly though.  For example, the rear parking sensors should be disabled when the towbar is in use, and the system anti-snake should be enabled.

I had the Westfalia detachable fitted by Derby Towbars earlier this year for £450 - did a fantastic job

I'd avoid using the dealers as the will either farm it out to a local towbar fitter anyway and charge you around £600+ (iirc) or make a pigs ear of it - if you search the threads you'll see plenty on the subject.

I also paid £450 at Derby Towbars for an excellent job in May 2012.

The Skoda towbar prep is a waste of money. It doesn't come with the fridge cabling so the fitter will have to put that wire in anyway and have the interior sill trims off. I got a very neat job and couldn't tell that any of the interior or boot trim had been off at all. All the electrics work as they should too.

And please, please, please DO NOT let a Skoda dealer anywhere near it. Car dealers have difficulty recognising towbars, let alone knowing how to fit them. Take it to a reputable towbar fitting business. It's what they do all day long and they usually know best. There are no warranty isues either in case someone tries to run that line of BS. The EU type approval regs take care of all that.

I had a detachable Thule towbar fit, but with only single electrics for £320 at indespension. Had to haggle a bit though.

How i can check if I have that Fridge line or not? I bought superb with tow bar preparation, and then Skoda dealership installed towbar... they didn't had idea even which parts to order... how I can check if they did good job with that fridge line?
