Can I limit RPM on an ASV TDI using VAG.COM ?

Featured Replies

To protect the poor thing from those that like to rev the nuts off it I was hoping to set a rev limit of ( say ) 4500RPM.

Any suggestions as to how I could do this ? ( I have VAG.COM )

I don't think you can, isn't 4.5k close to the limiter anyway?

VCDS can't do this.

You need somebody able to ticker with your map file (tuner etc).

Plus as above 4.5k would be a pointless limit. My DSG in sport changes at 4.5k anyway so still within the 'normal' rev range.

4.5K is nothing, don't forget at MOT time the diesel engine must be revved to the maximum permissible engine speed during the MOT smoke test. If the engine cannot attain the required engine speed then the car will fail the test (somewhere around the 5K RPM mark).

Presumably talking to the people who rev the nuts off your engine would be better...

^Really? The engine takes a very, very long time to rev get up to those revs rolling as it loses all puff. Do they do that on rollers? Free revving the engine like that would be horrific.

Thats exactly what I caught him at.  Tried it myself there today 5k indicated & increasing no bother. Dread to think where it would have finished.

I see reference to a max speed limit function in VAG butwould presume its max road speen ( rather then engine speed ? )

Wonder would reducing the fueling help ?

Any ideas ?

Do not play with the Max speed limit! It can only be adjusted downwards!

It is done without the engine under load and engine up to temperature.

And as above... leave the speed limiter alone... it can be fixed but only with an ECU reflash etc.

OK, promise I wont play with the max speed function then :)

I'm still wondering how to limit the revs.

( Seems a bit extreme to have to remap the ECU )

( Do newer VAG diesels have any sort of rev limiter option ? )

Unfortunately the rev limit is written in as part of the ECU map not so much a variable setting/learned value of the ECU.

So to be able to alter the limit you need to alter the cars ECU programming. Similar to what is done with a remap... the original file is downloaded, tinkered with and written back to the car.

  • 1 year later...

my engine skoda 1900tdi @ the Belgium OMT the reved it up 3 times close to 6000rpm ( in neutral) in a row a month lather the valve broke en the motor blocked, result seating of the valve broken en a hole in the piston.

its for the emisioncontrol they say, but every time they make the engine suffer they are plain scum.

Every single diesel car on the roads in the UK is revved up to maximum RPM (5K+) at least 3 times during the annual inspection (after the car is 3 years old) and failure is extremely rare. Your engine failure may have happened anyway, you cannot be sure that the OMT caused the failure. We have large notices warning owners that the garage hold no liability in the event of engine failure in part because they cannot be sure of the engine/cambelt condition etc. before the test.
