Yeti to Octavia III decision made

Featured Replies

Well I spent four hours at the dealers today; test drove a couple of Octavia's and a Fabia Scout :giggle:

Tried an Elegance hatch TDI 150 DSG and a vRS Estate TDI 184 DSG and noted that the vRS obviously has the better rear independent suspension, as 'pushing on' down winding country lanes the rear tyres were less prone to skipping/dancing over the road imperfections. Mind there was additional and noticeable tyre roar from the vRS over the Elegance. Given the Choice of the two I think I'd go Elegance myself, appeared a more relaxed drive and the performance from the 150 engine was very good and didn't feel that much off the vRS TDI, although as I say the torsion beam suspension is not quite up to the job if pushed. However neither felt as grippy at the back as the Haldex 4x4's I've been used to for the last five or six years.

Sadly they didn't have an Octy III TDI 105 to try, as it hadn't come back in from loan. So the venerable Fabia Scout stood in to at least give a TDI 105 a run out. Although after driving the 2 ltr motors it was fairly academic anyway which would be the right way to go engine wise.

I asked sales chap to give me figures for a potential Octy III SE 150 4x4 spec against a FLego Yeti Elegance 140 4x4 with the same options I have on mine but substituted front sensors for a elec seat; note this dealer at least is now using the new FL price list not the pre FL.

Anyway upshot is I've agreed a deal on an Octy III SE TDI 150 4x4 with a small pile of options, the Monster was just too expensive for my budget; Yeti's seem far more costly then they were three years ago.

So it is with quite some sadness I will be leaving Yeti ownership, if all goes to plan in about 4 months time.

Regards as always,

TP

Our loss is the Octy III's gain.

I'm sure (like Rockhopper) you'll be keeping a wary eye on the Yeti Forum. :wonder:

Best wishes for you with your new 'wheels', Tim.  I hope you'll not desert us completely, because the Yeti forum would be a poorer place without your knowledge and experience of the SM.

By the way, talking of wheels, does this Octy thing run on something with a real bit of rubber round it?  (Just a Yeti UK16"SpecialBuildClub joke :giggle: )

Hoping I'm allowed to hang around and not ostracised for going back to an Octy 4x4 :wonder:

Maybe if I re christen it a Yetavia, would that help :giggle:

Isn't the Octavia SE 150PS 4x4 over £23k? If this is the case, given that you've added options to yours, how much is a similar spec FL Yeti, as you seem to imply that it was too expensive for your budget?

SE Octy runs on 16" alloys as standard, with the universal 205/55 tyre and unlike the Yeti opting for the equivalent of the RRP defaults the rims to 16" anyway, preventing customers from opting for 17 or 18" rims.

Without options its 22.4k, whereas the dealer was quoting a Yeti Elegance 140 as now starting at 23.7k RRP.

Been finding the seating in the Yeti a tad uncomfortable due to a back problem, so looking at elec seat option which you can only get in Elegance spec; Octy SE seat appears broader and less of an issue, well hopefully.

I'm sure you're going to love the Octavia. I went the other way picking up my Yeti this week, as prior to this I had an Accord saloon and down sizing was the order of the day for me. I did look closely at the Octavia MkIII but it was too similar size-wise to the Accord. The quality/refinement on the Octavia was most impressive however, it did make me think twice before I pulled the trigger on Harvey....

First off, hi everyone, long time lurker, 1st time poster  :hi: .

Funny you should mention that as I literally sold my Honda Accord Saloon this evening to partly finance a new yeti i'm planning on ordering next week.

Ahh, I guessed right then! ;) Have to concur with all that you say too. You can feel the different rear suspension setups quite clearly when you push on but my biggest surprise has been the amount of road/tyre noise that comes into the cabin in the VRS - I assumed that it would not only handle better and give a more sophisticated ride but also transmit LESS noise through to the cabin. Also agree with our findings that the 150 is an improvement over the 140 but I felt the 185 in the vrs was no different to the older 170 unit in the mk2 vrs. I've said it over on the mk3 forum before but imo the new tsi vrs is a very nice thing all round, noticeably more able than the older 200bhp model but the new VRS Tdi is only a little improved over the older VRS Tdi - feeling like less of a complete car than the new TSi. I think you'll be very happy with the choice of SE 4x4 - IMO its the sweet spot in the range and is what I'd go to if I was changing now. :) Best of luck with it TP. :)

Congrats, I'm most impressed by the Yeti and I'm sure your new face lifted car will be a pleasure to own. I read somewhere on these forums that if you order a Yeti before the end of October, you can get the FL for pre-FL prices with the 3 year PCP finance/free servicing deal. Sounds like a bargain to me, as depending on what spec. you order, prices are rising by £500 to £800 per car.

Do you have electric seats in your current Yeti?

I appreciate everyone is different but if you are having back problems then electrically adjusted (and heated) seats are IMO the most important option to have, the adjustment is far better than the non electric seats.

I wouldn’t buy another car without them.

Just my 2p.

No not in the Yeti, felt at the time of ordering the lack of lumber on the previous SE was the problem, so in error I left elec seat of the option list.

Octy being an SE doesn't have the elec option but there is lumber and what seems a broader less sculptured chair. Also of note neither of our Fabia's give me problems; 59 Fabia base model and a Monte Carlo.

But of course...

(shouldn't there be a couple of commas in that sentence?) :giggle:

Despite leaving Yeti ownership some 6 months ago, I still keep coming back to this forum as it's one of the best forums I've followed (though I admit my experience of these things is somewhat limited). It's far more entertaining than the Audi forums I've been browsing lately.

I guess Yeti owners are a strange/oddball, I mean, interesting bunch with a broad knowledge and an eye for a bargain  :giggle:

Seeing as my head has been turned by the new A3 Sportback, I might be leaving Skoda ownership completely next year (though I am driving a new vRS on Monday (and a Leon FR) so you never know). Ether way, I won't be cancelling my Briskoda membership anytime soon.

I keep on lurking somewhere on the forum.

Glad you have made your mind up TP. I hope it works out comfortable enough for you.

Funny thing is my Freelander is more comfortable than the Yeti, has sports seats which hold you better (needs it as I rolls more though), has no height adjustment and the steering wheel only goes up and down! Despite all that, I find it more comfortable. And the suspension is far more compliant than the Yeti's ever was.

The Yeti is a great car, but the more I drive the Freelander, the more I like it, despite its shortcomings.

Seems a few of us are defecting .... I have a VW Tiguan 177 TDi R Line on order.

Ordering a heavier caravan forced the change, otherwise I would have gone for a facelifted Yeti.  Interestingly I've always felt I sat on the seat in the Yeti rather than in  the seat of my previous Octavia vRS's.

I give up TP.

Which dealer did phone you back?

Was it Hortons?

Thanks.   I've decided to go with Carfile to order once I sort the finances out.  As you say, if you order in October then the price for the new FL is the same as the pre-FL.  My big decision now is do I stick with the city Yeti or do I go with the outdoor version (which I am liking the look of more and more).  Then after that, what colour and do I get the spare wheel? (thinking of boot space)  I've also decided that i'm getting the Amundsen sat nav system DAB as I'm a lover of radio and set my heart on a DAB radio.

Not found that myself; dealer I've ordered the Octy from is already using the new Yeti price list; maybe some are still to catch up :wonder:
