Fixing my laptop

Featured Replies

I have a cq61 compaq laptop. Works fine on the AC adapter but the battery won't charge. The battery is new.

I've tried reflashing the bios to an updated version from the hp site; various hard/apparent battery resets; deleting and reinstalling battery and adapter drivers; and even a chkdsk. All to no avail so I am coming round to the realisation that it is a motherboard issue.

Is it worth bothering with, and is it easy to change on a laptop (I've done it several times on a desktop)?? Or is it sufficiently accessible to check for a broken solder joint??

Thanks in advance

Adam

Not the easiest job in the world, it's all those screws, millions of them.

Nothing like a desktop I'm afraid. They are very compact and have to go back together in order

Have a look, undo what you can on the back, but don't go too far if you're unsure as some can be hard work.

I guess with a little patience it may be worth a go.

Oh yeah, finding parts can be hard work and ridiculously expensive.

I got quoted £350 for a mobo once !!

Personally I'd bite the bullet and get a new laptop, I don't have the patience to muck about with, as David says, millions of screws.

Ok cheers kind of expected that!!!

Ok cheers kind of expected that!!!

Plus it's always nice to get a new 'toy' :)

Have you been able to test the battery in another laptop?? You say it is new, but sometimes they are duff/fake. 2-3 years ago a major UK company had to destroy thousands of new batteries because they were ALL fakes - full of sand!!!

Well no but I've run a battery test on the laptop and it is ok and it has held charge in the past.  That would mean its not full of sand at least I guess!!

BJB: I'd rather spend it on my car though!!

have you metered your ac adapters output to see if it is kapput ?

Yes its not that but thanks.  I'm presently having a look inside, nothing to lose....

You say new, how new and where did you get it from?

Could be a dead cell, which with some laptop batteries stops the rest charging. You won't fix that

It should have 12 months warranty whoever you got it from.

I meant looking inside the laptop.  But there seems to be no burnouts or loose connections apparent, so maybe you are correct.  Ill try the battery in another similar laptop if I can, and contact the seller if it is faulty.  Thanks all.
