Laurin or Vrs...which to for

Featured Replies

Hi all.

I am looking into a new for myself and have narrowed it done to 2.

1st. Autotrader. Vrs. Vrs 170 cr. 57 plate. 130 on clock 2 previous owners. 18 inch wheels. 4994. Diesel estate.

2nd. Autotrader. Laurin and klement. 140 2.0 tdi pd. 115k on clock. 3 previous owners. 4500. Diesel estate.

Both cars seem good. I have a budget of 5k and I would like a estate for practicality and have always been a diesel fan.

Pros for vrs - sporty, cr version and 2000 cheaper than next cr engine.

Pros for laurin - luxury, nice leathers, seem to wear better than the vrs seats? Also 1500 cheaper than nearest laurin equivalent.

Can anyonr here give us some advice or per one?

They both sound cheap, I would be careful on Autotrader as there a few scams going on at the minute.

As for L&K or VRS, I would go VRS because I like the look and the way the 170 delivers in a VRS.

Thanks for response.. both are from traders if that makes any difference.

didn't think the CR engines were in  the vrs till 58 plates

That vRS has nasty cheap looking parking sensors, probably fitted after putting the big ding in the back bumper!

I would say condition is more important than anything, so with both those cars you want to have a good look at the service history.

Yep, as above the vRS won't be a CR170, it'll be a PD170.

looks like a budget spec vrs too.

Aftermarket reversing sensors along with no maxidot, no hid's, no rear electric windows. I'd expect its a stream rather than stream mp3 headunit too.

I guess the sensors were fitted after he reversed into whatever he hit - smashing the lower reflector, creasing the bumper and scratching it underneath?

Ah the parking sensors. Just looked at a few other blue vrs's and can see that they have blue sensors and are positioned diffently to this one. So yes this must have been a cheap DIY job for someone.

As for conditions. I have seen the Laurin one today. It is at a dealers. Clean car, few scratches and alloys are knackered. Saw Lex auto leases service report and was serviced very regurlarly. Cambelt, oil pump, flywheel all done very recently... couple of troubling notes, 3 previous owners, last of which only had it 8 months and trader not on the log book, only 1 key and no jack kit in boot. I asked the dealer and he said current register keeper is a friend of his and he traded the octavia for a vauxhall igsignia he had. Only 1 key but that will be obtained when previous owner returns from holiday. Bit worrying he has not sent the log book in to dvla, if he did he would 4th keeper and I would be 5th! I guess its cheap because of these matters? I edging towards to the laurin can anyone say anything else to dissuade me?

The vrs being pd and 160 miles away is putting me off from viewing it. Also when I ring the dealer they are reluctant to telle anything about the car other than good clean car come view it.

Cant see manual level for window so assumed had rear electric window

thats a long treck and if you have any issues it could really bite you in the ass. I had issues with my vrs and wished I'd bought closer (40 miles away and the dealer, County Car sales on the A30 near yeovil, are simply crap)

If they dont want to tell much i wouldnt bother

edit: you're right. I read the advert and it doesnt mention rear electric windows.

If the vrs is a pd then go for the l&k as less issues with dpf and issues with injector recall not done properly, the l&k has the cambelt + dmf done already which are expensive + insurance will be cheaper.

The vRS does have rear electric windows.

It has the central armrest and 18" alloys. The rear electric windows came with these as a pack on early vRS's.

The picture that shows the rear door has the switch location obscured but the absence of the manual winder confirms they are fitted.

I had a 57 plate PD170 vRS and got rid in the end. After the injector change it was never right. As I sold it it was in limp-home mode, the DMF was rattling  and I was seeing the DPF light every other day.

You'll love the heated leather in the L&K over the coming months. The alloys can be refurbed and a jack and wheel brace kit can be had off eBay for very little money.

The biggest deal for me is as mentioned above. Anew cambelt and DMF confirms a well serviced car.

Based on those 2 particular adverts IMHO the L&K looks the tidier, un molested motor for my money.

Only you know if you want a vRS or a standard (well equipped) car. The comforts of the l&k are very nice :)

Good luck with whichever you go for or end up buying.

As for conditions. I have seen the Laurin one today.

You must have viewed it just after us then (we had to wait for him to arrive in the car at around 1100).

Did you not notice the HUGE discrepancy in the mileage then???

The dealer said all of the mileage had been recorded as KMS which is why it was way out!! WTF?

IMHO the car had been clocked big time and was previously a taxi or along those lines… holes in the centre console area of the dash, trim not put back together correctly so huge gaps where there should be none, toolkit and spare wheel holder missing, all alloys badly scuffed, front tyres almost flat and non had brilliant tread on them, these all set the alarm bells ringing, the service history was also sketchy, one receipt for tyres in 2011 showed the mileage as around the 135K mark, yet over two years later the car was showing 116K!

The dealer was also dead set against me scanning the car with VCDS, I explained there was no problem if he had nothing to hide!

(this is the 1st ‘dealer’ I have ever had refuse to let me scan a potential purchase)

This car is cheap for a reason… it aint a 116K car!! buyer beware!

As for vRS v’s a L&K they are two completely different cars

vRS 170bhp sporty car but most are seriously lacking in the spec department

L&K with a 140bhp (or 105bhp for the older ones) engine they are certainly not sporty… they are not slow but nowhere as quick as the vRS… however they are more comfortable and have oodles of spec.

We (son and daughter in law) chose the L&K for the above reasons, granted the car was older (55 reg) but it had MUCH lower mileage, was an honest looking car and the most important bit was the dealer could not have been more helpful, all the previous MOT’s (the other car didn’t have any) HPI report, printout of all the advisories on the previous MOT’s and he happy to let me scan the car etc.

Checked with lexauto lease. They sold the car in nov 2012 with 162k miles on it. They are 100% sure. Since then the car has had 2 new registered keepers on log book and the dealer who is not registered.

I rang the dealer to tell him his 116k miles octavia was actually sold last year with 162k miles.

His reaction was that he didnt know and someone has conned him. He then said the car is still well priced despite this and there are other 180k miles on autotrader for the 4k mark and 4500 is still a good asking price.

I told him, look you knew this car was clocked and that is why you wss only asking 4500 to begin with, if it had genuine 117k miles you would he asking 6k+. I said I would be reporting to trading standards as they are deceiving customers and even have a story to say recorded in km as driver was polish and driving abroad, they are in the scheme.

After 20 mins I got a phone call back saying if I read the advert it states miles are unwarrantied therefore theu have not done anything wrong. So I said because you put a 2 line quote this justifies you sell clocked cars, witha bull story? We will let trading standards deal with this. Also they have not submitted the dvla registered form and told them that is against the law also and he just kept quiet...

So in a nutshell, clocked back, km to miles story prepared v5 logbook not registered to them, and refuses to let anyone use a vcd to check the vehicle.

ThaNk you to the post above that made me do my checks

Awesome bit of research/detective work. Let's just hope that no one gets caught buying it before trading standards get onto it.

And from looking at the adverts quickly the l&k looked cleaner. You live and learn.

Just quickly reading one of your earlier posts in this thread; I may be misreading but you are saying the dealer has not registered as the keeper? They will not be logged as a keeper as they are trade.

Only private keepers clock up the registered keepers.

Still good spot on mileage sounds like a right iffy sale.

Ah..maybe they have registered the car. Did not know traders dont show up on the log book.

My last car was a vw tdi bora 115bhp..lasted me 9 years and I brought it off my uncle who brought it at an auction. Im only 35, still learning but quickly learnt 1 in every 10 is clocked and lots of crooks selling cars...

Also just learnt the cr vrs is actually pd.

So if it seems to food to be true- it is!
