Are Speedo Clocks Interchangeble

Featured Replies

Hi

I have just bought a LHD 1.4 petrol Skoda Fabia 2006, which was originally from Hungary.

I internd to MOT it and use it in the uk and would lik to change the KM only speedo to MPH/kh.

There are a fwe availbale on Ebay etc, but are from different models ie. 1.2 petrol.

Can I just use one of these or are they claibrated differently?

Thanks

Mark

They have the immob in them so you need someone to be able to clone the dash first.

So you cant just add a new speedo?

How do you clone the dash?

Never heard of this before

Changing the clocks is not straight forward, it requires a lot of knowledge and a copy of VCDS.

You cannot change just the speedo, its electronic and part of the main circuit board.

You'll need a whole replacement cluster, complete with its 4 digit SKC and you'll need the 4 digit SKC for the existing cluster. These are needed to pair the instrument cluster immobiliser to the main ECU,

See below, swapping clusters is not straight forward.

For Immo version 2 this gives a rundown of some of the steps in VCDS.

For immo version 3 this gives a rundown of some of the steps.

http://wiki.ross-tech.com/wiki/index.php/Immobilizer_III_Immobilizer_Swapping_(Instrument_Cluster)either of these the car will not start.

As above it's not a straight forward job. Mannyo beat me to the ross-tech links. Good luck with it though, let us know how you get on :hi:

Or u can get an Imobiliser delete which will enable you to fit the clocks without SKC codes :)

Obviously this means you have no imobiliser so your car would be easier to steal in theory.

But in reality thiefs dont really try to hotwire modern cars. They now break into your house to get the keys so makes no odds that ur imobiliser is disabled ;)

If you defeat your immobiliser your insurance will screw you over I suspect.

Almost certainly. But then again if you declare it and as said above, people tend to steal the keys now rather than try to hot wire the car so might not make a massive difference.

Thanks guys for the replies

Not sure I want to attempt this now.

I have been told, that MOT stations may not fail on the KM speedo.

If so, might just drive in KMs

It was always a temp measure until the car goes to Spain next year.

Thanks

MOT shouldn't fail on on metric speed/distance units, however let the tester know that the odometer is in Km as he can specify either miles or Km on the paperwork.

Why not get a UK dash from a same engined model, dismantle both dash panels and swap the graphics sheet over?

+1 on the last bit. No messing around coding, getting the correct mileage etc transferred. Easy enough to convert Kilometres into miles for the paperwork.

Km speedo deffo not an mot fail. Mot'd and registered 2 Spanish Lambrettas with km speedos.

Thanks guys

Yes you are right about speedo not failing MOT.

Been down and asked and they told me, they dont even look at it.

apparently I can get universal transfers, to use until I take the car down to Spain, where it will end up.

Rather than changing the whole unit just change the plastic sheet with Kmh printed on it to an mph one.

They should look at it to check that it's obviously not broken and that it can be illuminated - it's part of the test.
