Funny wind noise

Featured Replies

Hi,

My Octy VRS estate has a funny wind noise while driving at speed, into the wind or even with a stong cross wind (more noticable with motorway driving).

It sounds like it's coming from where the drivers A pillar meets the bonnet/wing. It's more of a rattle than a whistle but it must be wind related as it doesn't do it at the same revs in 2nd for example.

The dealer has heard the noise and they thought it was the bonnet release cable so they put some foam padding around the cable to dampen it, which promptly came off and flapped around inside the engine bay. They did mentioned that it could be the windscreen and that it may need repalcing.

I've read other threads on here about windscreen problems but nothing that sounds definitely like my problem.

Car going back in soon for another look but in the mean time does anybody have any ideas or info that may help solve this....? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers....

PLEASE PLEASE If you ever find out what it is PM me & let me know.

Wendys L&K has done this from new but it only starts at about 80 mph so hard for dealer to diagnose, it seems to come & go. Your comments re cross winds & motorway driving agree with us.

I am 99.9 % certain its not the windscreen as we have had 2 new screens due to breakages & yet the noise hasnt changed.

Turning heater controls on & off & operating the wipers makes no difference, I had wondered if it was the sound proofing panel clipped to the underside of the bonnet moving with certain windflows under the bonnet, Bonnet release cable might be an idea, also maybe the under tray but I recently badly damaged Wendys undertray taking a short cut through some bollards in Paris yet the noise hasnt changed.

Likewise any help appreciated from other Briskodians

Agree with the 80mph... bang on...

Hi,

been reading this one.

I had wind noise, and couldn't figure it out.

I moaned one day to the dealer that the drivers wiper blade was sweeping up and touching the "A" pillar.

I had it moved and the wind noise stopped.

I put it down to the resting place of the wiper blade.

When it came to rest it was in a lower position and the noise appeared to stop.

It's worth a go anyway.

:D;) tut tut 80mph i assume you mean you get this problem on a track and not on the queens roads as the maximum you shoudl be is 70mph....

+/-10% though isnt it for speedo error  ;)

It seems to disapear over about 125 ( French test track of course)

I have wind noise too. Seems to be coming thru the B-pillar in my car, it's annoying. Especially when a trailer truck zooms by me...in fact, you can hear it from quite a few meters behind...I can't tell what it is but I've addressed the problem to my dealer...hope they can get it sorted...

Mine too! I was going to talk to the dealer about it this week. Starts at about 80mph on the straights of my private track.

to be fair it probbaly is still there...just drowned out by rest of the noises you get at that speed.. :D

Stuart, cheers for the idea of the loose sound proofing under the bonnet, I had a look and my VRS doesn't have any (should it????).

On closer inspection there is a piece of plastic trim that comes from the roof rails and runs all the way down the side of the windscreen/"A" pillar. Right at the bottom, where this meets the wing/bonnet it was loose and could be 'tapped' to make a noise against the windscreen. The passenger side trim is secure all the way down.

To make things worse the rubber seal that runs along the bottom of the windscreen was lifted up over this piece of trim on the drivers side creating a small hole. On the passenger side this seal is under the plastic trim.

So I delicately lifted the drivers side plastic trim and moved the rubber seal underneath it. The trim is still loose but now when 'tapped' it's silent as its hitting rubber and not windscreen.

Went on a test drive and couldn't hear any noise from that area at all and it was quite windy here in the West Country yesterday evening.

So fingers crossed, touch wood and all that it may be sorted but it was intermittent so I'm not counting my chickens yet. If it does work I'll need to find some way of fixing this trim down permanently.
