What fuel?

Featured Replies

Is there a huge difference putting in 95ron compared to 98/99 ron in the Octavia vRS Petrol facelift?

I've read different stuff all over the internet and a bit confused as to what to put in.

Some say that it only runs on 98 ron and using regular petrol WILL damage the engine?

Hope someone can clear this up for me.

Thanks.

Good luck with that one!

I've used both. More pull with vpower but that could just be my sub concious internally justifying 8p a litre more over 95 RON!

More opinions along shortly I would imagine :)

What does it say inside the fuel cap and in the owners manual? Some people claim better running and mpg with the higher octane fuel. But never heard of any damage when running on minimum recommended octane (usually 95ron as you say).

Skoda state 95ron for TSi. I see no advantage using higher octane fuel other than your wallet in your pocket will be lighter thus increasing mpg.

For my 2011 FL TSI I have found the following fuels to make the car drive better (in order):

Tesco Momentum

Esso standard unleaded

ASDA standard unleaded

Shell V-power

The worst fuel that I never use now was Shell bog standard unleaded. Car drove really lumpy after filling up with that!

Not sure how scientific it is or if the fuel really had anything to do with ultimately!

I don't pay any attention to MPG so not sure how they compare on tha front!

You're right Firestormwset.  Octane is not a measure of quality, and higher octane fuel is not 'better' fuel - it's just takes more compression before it will spontaneously combust in a motor.  It offers no advantages to a motor not designed to run on it.  Try filling the car with LPG (110 octane).  I guarantee it won't run better  .

Mine runs a bit lumpy/noisy on 95 RON but smooth as silk on 98 RON Shell V Power and 99 RON Tesco Momentum.  Also, I know that MPG is definitely better on V Power (3 mpg over two mile 800 mile round trips, brim to brim - one on 95, one on 98).  I always avoid supermarket fuel whatever I put in it because of the lack of detergents in them.

No idea about damaging the engine (check owner manual) but you'll probably get slightly more power with higher octane fuels:

Whether enough to notice or care about is debatable though.

The other potential advantage of V Power / Ultimate are the improved cleaning properties, but these are rather tricky for an individual driver to test!

Use supermarket 95ron on my remapped tsi and runs perfect. Have tried super unleaded, v power, bp ultimate and found no difference in performance or economy. For those that say supermarket fuel is rubbish I've used it in quite a few cars totally well over 250k miles and never had an issue.
