V5 and plate match but insurance different

Featured Replies

I've bought a petrol Octavia vRS in white and due to pick it up tomorrow.

When i phoned my insurance to change the cars over they have the new reg plate as a limited edition, 4dr, diesel. It is a 5 door hatchback petrol.

I am just off the phone to Skodas 7 day insurance which i get for free and they have the car as limited edition also but it doesn't say if it's petrol or diesel.

I contacted the dealership about this and they emailed me the V5 and everything is as how it should be saying nothing about limited edition and it's all correct saying 5dr petrol etc.

What can i do because when i phone my insurance next week to add the new car it's going to have diesel 4 dr when it's not and if anything happens then they won't pay out.

What can i do? ha

Thanks

Hi,

Just to let you know we use similar data bases which work off the registration number however whilst in most cases it is accurate sometimes there are discrepancies. In this type of incident we would take all the vehicle details directly from the customer.

Regards,

Dan.

The databases used by insurers aren't always perfect.

Depending on the insurer, our Touran is listed as being a Bluemotion which it isn't.

You're in the best position to know whether it's a 4dr or a 5dr, a petrol or a diesel. I'd like to see an insurer trying to tell you you've got something you haven't. :)

Sounds like the perfect situation where an insurance company would weasel out of any claim, on the basis of the paperwork mis-match.

Personally I'd want a written assurance from the insurer that they are accepting your version of the details, not the details their database shows up. I would also invite them so send a representative to verify those details as well.

It should be okay mate. Use some of the online car data checkers or the one ok n autotrader on the sell car function. Insurers will get their info from the dvla data bases. Just talk to them about it. If u disclose the correct information they can't refuse to pay.

When I worked for a motor insurer I saw a fiat Punto where the vehicle type was not 'hatchback' but 'fire engine'! Sometimes databases can be wrong, even dvla info.

Call the dvla if there's a problem with it mate.

All you need to do, surely, is post/email a copy of the V5, with pictures of the car? This will prove that the car is what you say it is.

I think most insurance companies will accept that the databases are not 100% accurate 100% of the time. As long as you don't speak to a phone drone who just repeats the 'Computer says 'No'' line, you should be fine

When an insurer corrects a data error, doesn't this get fed back into the system?

The insurer wouldn't correct the dvla, they would only edit their own system.

The insurer wouldn't correct the dvla, they would only edit their own system.

So how can information held by different insurers differ so much if it all comes from the same DVLA source?

Just an update on this.

Contacted my insurer (Sainsburys) and i told them to input it all manually and they have but on askmid it shows as SKODA OCTAVIA 2.0 (13ON) VRS 5DR. I said to them it's a 2010 year and with them having 13on then that's the mk3. Once i get the certificate through the post i'll see that it says and if its wrong then i'll contact them again and if not i'll pop into the DVLA office when the V5 arrives.

Just checked www.vehichlecheck.co.uk and they have the correct details of the car so don't have a clue what's going on ha!
