Bit of a dilemma

Featured Replies

Guys,

I'm in need of some advice. I just ordered a new 2.0 TDI SE estate (no options) on Saturday at my local dealer. Before popping down there i was looking at online quotes via carwow.com to get an idea of potential discounts on the 0% PCP deal. Best offer i got online was 3% off list price.

Anyway my local dealer would not offer any discount whatsoever, but i shook hands on the deal as we have a great relationship due to the way they looked after me when i rejected the previous Octavia i bought from them last year.

Literally 15 minutes after leaving the showroom i received another quote via carwow offering me 6% off list price on 0% PCP!

I felt a little sick as i've potentially paid £1200 more for the car than i could have paid elsewhere.

Question is what should i do?

Do i call my dealer and cancel the order and take the cheaper offer and ruin a perfectly good relationship?

The dealer offering 6% discount is located 120 miles from my home and after i've bought the car i'm not exactly going to use them for servicing and warranty work.

Alternative option is i call my dealer in the morning and ask again if they can do something to sweeten the deal. I'm not expecting them to match the 6% discount but thought it may be worth pushing for them to add a couple of options to the car. I'd like cruise control and a heated front windscreen (total cost £380)

Opinions please

Cheers

Tell your dealer what you've been offered

If they can't match it, or do whatever possible to make you feel happy to stay with them then cancel the order

Its a big saving and cant be ignored

Just think of the options that would buy you for a start

Best of luck

As above. In this climate that amount of money can't be looked away from. Your local dealer has to up their game if they want your buisness. Simple.

I think you should go in and see them face to face rather than ring them. Be polite and explain the 6% deal came on after you verbally agreed the deal and see what they say. They might offer you something especially if they are after a signed deal before the end of the month for their sales volumes. Ultimately though I'd stay with your dealer though as a good one is certainly worth having as you don't know if you'll need their help again.

Absolutely agree with Damo. Give them the opportunity to match your other offer. At the end of the day, it is business. It is their job to make the most out of you and it is YOUR job to drive the best bargain. This is your leverage. It is just a game, only difference is it's with real money.... your money! You have not signed anything or paid a deposit and your have a right to change your mind.

Is a good dealer rapport worth £1200?

Not in my eyes it isnt

Sure, its nice to have a good relationship, but plenty of other dealers around

If they're a good dealer, they'll do their utmost to keep you happy anyway

And, yes... speak to them in person not over the phone

I just ordered through carwow and took the print outs of both price and pcp quote from the carwow dealer who are 160 miles away from me. My local dealer beat drivethedeal on my current car and my mums Fabia but new manager and new salesman since then and guess what, can't offer any discount that good so didn't get my order.

They did tell me that the supplying skoda dealer has been number one in the uk for the past two years and as a skoda dealer they strive to be like them, but they shook my hand and said thanks for the opportunity of your business but we can't (or won't) compete with that.

I'm never loyal to any of them. Go where you are getting the BEST deal that you can get as its your hard earned cash.

Try and stay with the dealer you have a good relationship with, thats what I have done, I was in a similar position to you, had been offered around 5-6% online with the 0% PCP, and with reasonable PX's, so went and saw my local dealer who I have dealt with for years, they know me, I know them, we both know what we need to do to get a deal done.

I explained, that 5% on a £28K car was serious money, so I said what can you do, he has paid for a couple of my options, a tank of fuel, higher than average PX held until delivery of new car, they are paying for private plate transfer plus a few other odds and sods, so although its not an 'on paper discount' as shown by a discount against cost of the car, its things which has has agreed to absorb into the price of the deal as opposed to stuff that I would of had to pf paid out for anyway, plus a couple of options worth a few hundred quid, its not quite the same discount as other places had offered, but if you go down to the nitty gritty and work it out to the pound it worked out at around 3.25% discount or costs against the car that I don't have to pay for now etc, I was happy with that as it meant I got some money saved, he was happy as on paper on the deal he was making a good margin, so overall we were both happy, he got a sale, I got a deal, we shook hands, relationship intact!

I would definitely go in face to face with your dealer and if he thinks as much of your relationship as you believe that they do then he will try and at least sweeten it to make you feel that you have got something and it has been worth you staying local.

Good luck :-)

Cheers guys. I'll pop in tomorrow and see what they say.

I did actually sign the order form for the car but they never asked for a deposit which i thought was a bit strange.

I can still cancel even though i signed on the dotted line?

Its not like the car has been built since Saturday afternoon and you should be able to use the old 14 day cooling off period as a way out?

For all the people who say stick with the 'local' dealer, ask yourself this - when did they last phone you up for a chat or to see how you're going on?

They're paid to offer a service at a price and if the price isn't right, walk away.

Hi.

I would go and see the dealer face to face. At the end of the day it is your money and you are free to spend it however and wherever you choose.

Yes it is good to have a good relationship with your local dealer, and if he is as good as you thin,k he should do something to assist you.

With regard to signing the order, I signed mine on a Saturday and the salesman told me the order would not be processed by the office until Monday.

You may find that yours will be the same. Go and see him first thing in the morning.

Best of luck.

Wouldn't worry about you signing the order . The main thing is you haven't put down a deposit. In practice they won't go on and order you the car they know you don't want. But do talk to them as soon as reasonably possible.

Had a chat with the sales manager this morning and he agreed to give me 3% off list price. He did point out my Part-Ex price was higher than average, about £400 above book price, which is guaranteed until delivery. Used the discount to add the winter pack as an option so I'm happy with the end result.
