Which oil to top up with?

Featured Replies

Car: 2010 Yeti Elegance 1.2TSI Elegance DSG - Petrol

Service: Fixed 10,000 miles or one year (QG2)

I need to top up and according to the manual I should be using VW 502 000.

However, the Skoda garage that carried out the last service said they don't stock this and I should usng Long Life Oil 2 fully synthetic (I think that's what it's called) which they said they use on their cars whether they are fixed service or variable service.

Can anyyone confirm this for me?

Only your garage can confirm which oil they use at services.  I suggest you find out what was put in at the last oil change,  and get some of that, provided it meets the VAG spec.

Found out from Skoda garage that carried out the last service. They said they used Castrol Edge 5W/40.

Just looked in Halford's and they only do 5W/30.

Skoda sell it but it's more expensive.

I use Castrol Edge 5-30W as per my Skoda dealer. Theirs is designated as Edge 'Professional'

which they tell me is the same spec as the normal retail (we can buy over the counter/shop) Edge without the 'Professional' bit the Motor Trade use. It meets the full Skoda/VW spec

I use it on normal fixed servicing although it is the spec for Variable servicing, so probably over spec for this use.

if you have a local Trade Parts Specialist (TPS) close buy, give them a ring. They will supply the genuine VAG/ Skoda approved oil at a better price than you will find at a dealers or other motor factors.

This tells you everything you need to know:

http://www.opieoils.co.uk/p-713-castrol-edge-5w-30-fst-fully-synthetic-engine-oil.aspx

"Castrol EDGE 5W-30 is equally suitable for petrol and diesel vehicles where performance specifications VW504 00 and VW507 00 are demanded. Plus Castrol has managed to meet the requirements of most previous VW oil specifications making it suitable for new and older engines.

Use in place of Castrol Formula SLX LongLife II (now discontinued).

Castrol EDGE 5W-30 FST fully synthetic engine oil can be used instead of Castrol edge professional 5W-30 FST, products that are mainly only available from main dealerships and are generally a lot more expensive with similar / same specifications. "

Usually seriously less expensive than Halfords, even after delivery.  Very good delivery service / next day. I've bought nearly all my consumables and lubricants from Opie for the last 3-4 years since discovering them. - Fred

Open your boot, and use the litre of oil that came with your car

TPS is not available to the general public as per their website unless you know different as to register you have to submit

Trade details that general public could not supply.

The one from the boot was used up a couple of years ago (the car is three years old now)

Anyway, went back to the SKoda dealer today and came away with:

Quantum LongLife III

5W30 Fully Synthetic Engine Oil, 5L

Whoever, I spoke to on the phone said they used Castrol Edge 5W/40 on the last service.

When I went back there today a different person served me and they only did one litre of that Castrol 5W/40. Then he said that Quantum LongLife III was the one they always use and said it was the right one for my car.

So I cam away with that.

Not strictly true.

Some will supply anyone, some won't, it's up to the branch.

Bottom line is try your local branch and see what they say.

What he said ^^^

I just called my local branch and asked if they supplied "Joe public" said yes,got there trade discounts.

I think Quantum Longlife III was about £28 for 5L

As stated in another thread somewhere , I used to be Tech Manager in a high street branch of Halfords before they were all closed down in favour of the 'superstores'.

From memory, and when relating to oil, (Castrol 5w 30 or 5W 40.   The first number relates to winter protection and the second number relates to summer protection.

So...... a 5W 30 will be better in a colder environment than a  20/40.

If this is incorrect, feel free to jump in and correct.  :)  (I'll just hate you forever :D..........................................................only joking :) )

All above is true but not really relevant.  You can't get a 20W-40 oil that is suitable for VWs!

You need to focus on the performance specification.  For the TSI engine you need to have either a 502 00-approved oil or a 504 00-approved oil.  The former is for "standard" oil drain intervals (time and distance servicing) and the latter is for extended oil drain intervals (variable servicing).  If you are on variable servicing you should use the 504 00 ("longlife") oil; if you are on T&D servicing you can use either.

Castrol EDGE 5W-40 meets the 502 00 specification.  If you want a "longlife" oil then Castrol EDGE 5W-30 covers it.  Or you can go to a dealer and pick up some Castrol EDGE Professional Longlife III 5W-30.  The "Professional" oil range is only available through franchised dealers, not through retailers (shops) or independent workshops.

The Quantum Longlife III oil is also 504 00-approved and is suitable for your TSI engine.

A bit late but I've just discovered a can of oil that the garage used at my last service. It's Quantum III 5W 30 VW 504-00/507-00 Approved.
