Steering lights

Featured Replies

Any way to stop the low down lights responding to turns of the steering wheel. Fed up being told that one of my lights is out when parking the car. Not even overly convinced that they provide any real benefit on the open road

Almost as pointless as lighting the front of the car when reversing!

I have found them useful specially when turning/driving in narrow country lanes and driveways.

They can be disabled with VCDS.

You can disable them through maxidot too. I personally like them, they really do help during the night down lanes. I think the superb has the best cornering lights on any car I've seen so far.

I agree. They might not be to everyone's liking, but they do work. I had them on my previous car aswell, and those were useless. The Superb ones really light up the curb when you make a turn.

I also have to back into my driveway, and when they come on they really light up a low curb that I have to watch out for when the nose comes around, I find that very handy.

If anything it teaches you not to leave your wheels turned when you park  :giggle:

Actually this is very effective. If you very rarely reverse down narrow unfamiliar routes then you won't see the benefit.

If you do you will.

When the front of the car swings wide the front fogs illuminate low walls, high kerbs and any other bumper scratching obstacles.

Ignore them, they must drive around with their eyes closed. Loads of cars utilise the front fogs as cornering lights these day.

As with DRL's they'll (eventually) get used to them.

Nope still pointless, that's what the headlights do. If its that narrow perhaps you shouldn't be driving down there. The cornering lights on my Kia Sportage were brilliant. They were a seperate dedicated light which also pointed out at an angle rather than just forward.

Can't help thinking that VAG group ones are a gimmick.

Come to rural Cornwall these lights are just what you need, it is a fantastic area for large stones placed at entrances to drives, and we still have on many corners the stones used when traction engines had to turn tight corners without damaging walls or verges. They also come into their own where we don't have streetlights. As to not driving down narrow roads again come to Cornwall and see what a lot of our roads and lanes are like, I used to have to drive in my business down lanes where the grass touched both sides of the vehicle. I would love to live where all roads are motorway width and everywhere is illuminated at night.

The shared driveway upto our house can be quite dark at nights, especially with no outside lights on the houses. The cornering lights work very well and assist with lighting up the low down areas. IMO they work very well.

People who question them as having a "light out" clearly don't go out that often because there are a multitude of cars with them on these days.,

I thought you meant the car was telling you one of your lights wasn't working, in which case my response would be to replace the bulb!  Wrong end of stick taken by me I think.

Reading this thread it appears that you are in the minority so my guess would be that they aren't pointless.

The headlights don't look around corners on the non-xenon equipped Superbs so aren't going to light up obstacles that are very close and to the side of the car.

The front fog lights light up low and wide and so make for very good cornering lights, as confirmed by lots of owners.

As for not driving down narrow roads or turning at night in unfamilair surroundings then I only wish I covered as few miles as you.

I agree people have different options but for me they don't do anything. Yes they are low but id hardly call them wide. Like I said the kia's actually pointed outwards and lit everything in the verges. I had the xenons on my old Vrs and the directional control was excellent.

I don't think 20000 miles a year is so few and all of these are rural Hampshire. Even at 3 in the morning on the way home from work I don't notice them. Im always looking ahead in advance and can see what's coming.

They only work at very low speeds (40kmh or less) so you'll only notice them during low speed manoeuvres rather than driving steadily down rural roads.

As said, VCDS will get them stopped, I don't think you can in Maxidot, otherwise I would have not needed to use my laptop to disable  mine.
