2.0 PD Scout/4x4 Owners - Worn Camshaft - Who's had it?

Featured Replies

Dear All,

Have just got the Scout back from it's latest drama. This time it was worn camshaft lobes and dished lifters (one even had a hole knocked through). All very similar to this article here:

http://www.myturbodiesel.com/1000q/multi/camshaft-inspection-replace-vw-tdi.htm

The symptoms where basically running rough as hell out of nowhere, horrific vibrations under load.

The car has ultimately only done 127,000 miles. Not many for a modern TD to my mind, yet this year has been horrific in worn engine parts (DMF, Turbo and Camshaft I'm looking at you!)

So my post is two fold. One to flag up another 'when' not 'if' of this 8v engine only used in the Scout and 4x4 and also gauge if others have had the same camshaft issue, and if so at what mileage?

None of the above as yet on my 2008 105k mile Scout. I am getting a little nervous about the next 40k miles over the next 2 years

No sign on our 2008 Scout, but its only done 45,000 miles...

Sounds like the old chocolate can issue on the high power 1.9 pd engines.

Has your car been on fixed or variable servicing?

That's exactly what it is, same head apparently.......

I was on variable, dealer serviced all its days......

That was mainly caused by using the wrong oil (505.00 rather than 505.01) but this unlikely to be the cause in your case as it has a dpf therefore should have always had 507.00.

Some VW engines show quite heavy cam wear when run on 5W30 oil, but 5W40 prevents the problem (too late now).  They specify 5W30 to eke out another 1mpg or so in the tests, but the heavier stuff should have higher film strength when hot.

That's no good. Where did you get the car serviced, are you the only owner so far?

Ex-demo to me at 3600 miles, so as good as new, and then main dealer serviced all its days at the excellent West End Garage.

So, all quite an infuriating mystery given that I've never scrimped on maintenance. Won't be a problem once my Octavia 3 4x4 turns up.......

What happened to the turbo?

Turbo and top end problems suggests an oil pressure/circulation issue.

Interesting... I've got a 2008 Skoda Octy 2.0 TDI Scout and have suffered intermittant rough running, sometimes but not always sounds as if its missing.

It has been serviced at Skoda dealers except for the last 2 annual services which were done at a local VW/Audi specialist. I took it into them who say I have the dreaded camshaft and tappet wear...and that will be £700+OMG!! (£1100 inc aircon!!).... On my journey home the DPF light came on (wasn't on before) and it sounded sporadically awful. Stopped for 5mins on the way home then started-up again and it ran Ffine for the remaining mile home. This year there was an oil leak which required the cam cover gasket to be replaced (wasn't low on oil), but noted too many oil drops on the drive. Also the DPF needed cleaning and the sensor replacing to restore regen capability....It is used for short journeys.

Before I spend any more money (I spent £100 to get assessed as well as identify, not fix a problem with the aircon) I will get a second opinion, but if this is really the problem I'm disappointed yet again with poor VAG quality.

I'm not sure how involved swapping the cam and the tappets are but it can't be that time-consuming. I've replaced the head Mk2 golf after a head skim and that was straight forward so this can't be too hard. I suppose one thing i need to be aware of is where those bits of cam/tappet have disappeared to since i'm sure they could wreak havoc to the engine internals

I  see Darkside appear to do a camshaft kit for £300 so I could save myself some money.

I see that there are instructions here:
http://workshop-manuals.com/skoda/octavia-mk2/drive_unit/engine_2.0/103_kw_tdi_pd_2.0/100_kw_tdi_pd/engine_cylinder_head_valve_gear/repairing_valve_gear/removing_and_installing_camshaft_for_engine_with_engine_identification_characters_bmm/

I have 2009 1.9PD PL Octavia estate, I had similar problem as you describle ie rough running under load and black smoke plus that it gave impression that there was more fuel being sucked in to the cylinders.

At idle there was no problems ticking over at 850/900rpm.

This is with a recondition engine which had done about 200000miles, original engine had done 1075000miles but it had to be scrap due to the crankshaft bearing shells breaking up.

I had Lion Garage, Leicester to replace camshaft, followers, rocker gasket. Total I paided was about £680.

The pictures show the damage of the camshaft.
