Are there too many options?

With that you get a rear wheel drive car, which is absolutely useless in poor weather and by the time you spec it to the same as a Skoda, you be hitting the £30k+ marker, I tried it and found that to get a car to the same spec as an Octavia would cost me £32k!

Nice post, every single person I've told that I'm spending £24.5k on a Skoda has said to me "go for a BMW 3 Series instead".

Without exception.

Whats the spec of a brand new 3 series for £24k?

Oh I don't disagree......but it gives you an insight into the mind of your average Brit.

If you've got money to blow on a car, go for a Beemer, innit?

You don't get much for your money so I'm guessing you're paying for build quality?

BMW...Brand Mind Warp...............but things are changing.......slowly but surely.

Similar quality in general now, but some manufacturers still insist that their vehicles are elite, and, sadly the general public are conned into believing this. Mid rangers are not elite cars, just ordinary metal (usually) boxes with a little more engine performance and body mass.

Skoda vehicles are not any different, but the advantage they offer is a significant cost saving over their rivals whilst ensuring reliability, attractive optional extras, modern, bold and appealing looks. They let customer satisfaction go to work. The general public are sometimes naive and quick to latch onto branding, maybe because it feels safe and agreeable. Several large manufacturers do look tired, dated and done quite frankly. They have to change but I'm not sure they can. They are stuck in a time capsule but people are moving forward. Skoda has found the way and it's appealing. Keep up the good work Skoda.

Manufacturers/ dealers are now giving such big discounts or making the more desirable add-ons to a car an option in the UK 2013 has seen the best new car sales for a long time.

Changing the options and standard spec has been a strategy to increase profit in a time of supposed hardship.

Ah, there I'd disagree.

Drivethedeal and autoebid don't discount Skodas at all whereas you can pick up a Citroen C5 204bhp auto for £23k (RRP £31k) or an Alfa Romeo Sportiva (170bhp but 0-62 in 7.9) for £22k (RRP £29k).

both those cars are utter depreciation disasters though. If they didnt discount them to that extent they wouldnt sell.

RRP's have fallen out of the conjurer's bag.

They are held up by those who want your money.

Window dressing is not real.

This is a good thread. Something to get your teeth in to. :-)

There is no disputing that BMW's are good cars and I'm pretty sure that if we all had 32k to spend on a motor without financial worry then more if us might have at least walked into a BMW dealer and considered a test drive followed by a hand shake.

BUT. I would like to think that the majority if Skoda owners don't have that sort of money to throw away and the reality is that the new Octy offers everything a BMW has and does it equally as well. If you are fussy then there may be comments about handling and build quality. However, I can honestly say that driving the new Octy feels like quality and reliability. I am actually quite proud to be driving a top spec Elegance knowing it's cost 24k.

Skoda is teaching other cars and manufacturers a lesson in how to build a good car for a good price without a bad word to say about it.
