I won't have anyone bashing the standard 4x4 brakes any longer!

Featured Replies

Used the 4x4 turbo to take part in an advanced driving course here in NL, and amazed onlookers with the car's braking distance.

Here I was, at approx. 50 mph, slamming on the brakes, on a very wet surface, the ABS getting the car to a shuddering halt. Guess after how many yards I got to a complete standstill?

Less than 18 yards. The instructor was left flabbergasted.

He noted that I didn't carry any passengers, and that the sticky S-03s helped a lot, but he was still suitably impressed by the brakes' performance.

So I won't have anyone diss the standard 4x4 stopping gear anymore!

Imagine AP 6 pots and 335 Discs then :D

Good to hear it's doing well, the MAD springs would help aswell perhaps?

Yeah, probably less dive too due to the Koni/MAD set-up...

Anyway, I outbraked the facility-supplied cars by some 20 yards.

How much would 6-pots and jumbo discs take off those 18 yards?

the brakes on my 4x4 are alright but not amazing i'd say

Once the effects of a long Scottish winter and heavily salted roads have worn off pads and discs, collisions with straying sheep, deer, etc have been safely avoided due to an impressively short stopping distance - from the legal maximum downwards. Most of the time the brake pedal feels spongy during normal braking (a VW characteristic ?) but somehow forward motion is always (so far) reduced with confidence

Yes, I have that too, which makes you think the brakes aren't all that much. But as soon as you really hammer your foot down and the ABS does its stuff, the stopping power is really impressive.

However, I do remember blasting down the Oberhausen straight in streaming rain at 125 mph, carrying four people, and deciding on a driver swap. The car finally came to a halt halfway down the parking area... So keep on increasing weight and adding speed and any set of brakes will be crap. :D
