Poor MPG

Featured Replies

Hi

I am new to this forum and I have a 2006 Octavia TDI but I am shocked at the MPG as it seems to have gone down rapidly in the last couple of months. I have no idea why and it doesn't seem to run any differently but I'm getting low 40's instead of 48-49 mpg on the same route I take every day.

It's an early 2.0 TDI bkd lump and has 134,000 on the clock... Anyone got any suggestions?

I see the MPG drop off in my Yeti when it is getting ready for a service, maybe an oil change will help?

Other things to consider are tyre pressures, weather too, it has been windy lately and a head wind could dint your MPG or even a binding brake calliper, do you notice any excess heat from the brakes after your journey?

Thanks for the quick reply, it was serviced at 130,000 but not by my usual garage and the brakes are about 80% worn as well as the discs. I know they need replacement but I'd hoped that they would hold out until the new year.

I may bring the replacement forward but I have now also got three lights on the dash ABS, TYRE PRESSURE and ESP lights are all on which I'm told is probably the ABS speed sensor. I can't see how they are connected though

ABS, ESP & TPMS all require functioning ABS sensors on all wheels. If one is not working it will effect all three elements.

If you mean how a broken sensor effects a drop in MPG, I can't see how unless it is applying the brakes to one wheel enough to cause an increase in drag.

My BKD (with 131k miles) has very variable fuel economy (low 40's to low 50's) and fresh oil does seem to help slightly as does close monitoring of tyre pressures (don't rely upon TPMS to tell you when to pump them up).

However there are so many variables involved in fuel economy such as wind, wet roads, tyre pressure, speed, gear changing, braking, fuel type, etc. I'd only worry if the long term averaged started to drop (full tanks).

I've tracked over 26k miles and almost 60 fill ups using Fuelly and can see no real patterns to whether it's high 40's or low 50's.

Get your car scanned with VCDS to see why the lights are on and which sensor it is and keep a close eye on that wheel for any increase in temp after journeys when compared to the other wheels.

My MPG always drops at this time of year.

Reducing temperatures and the introduction of winter fuel.

Agreed, mine has dropped around 20% through the last month! perfectly normal.

Same here, my 1.9 fabia is starting to drop off now, think the winter fuel is here!

I had this on my Octavia vrs last year, it related to dirt getting thrown off the rusty abs ring and getting stuck in the sensor, reason I know it was this is because after a good power wash the lights didnt came back on. All the fucntions need the speed sensor to work correctly.

Mines not dropped yet but now its November my next fill maybe the winter mix.

If I notice a 10% drop as in previous years I'm going to splash out on a tank of the premium VPower to see if that makes any difference. Its 8k miles until spring.

I'm going to try this then, I'm not relishing replacing it
