TDI Hot Starting Question

Featured Replies

So as the battery could be the one it left the factory with, and as its a 70ah one could that be the reason I am having the warm stating issue?

The rating is fine and correct for your car.

It IS the original battery as the part code starts with 1J0. A replacement would be the same code but with 000 replacing the 1J0.

Batteries are past their best after five years.

  • When you know it will be bad to start, try jumping the car from another battery....

  • Look for a replacement from a scrappy? As for VCDS, look in VCDS forum on here there is a thread with a list of people who have it. Sent from my Nexus 4 using Tapatalk

So as mine is 15 years old its done well but could to with replacing

Would upgrading to a 100ah battery make any differance to the hot start issue?

So would buying a new battery make any differance to the hot start issue?

As my battery is 15 years old I might as well get a new one, would I be better off getting a 70ah or 110ah? (I have no idea as I've never had to buy a new battery before)

Buying a new battery should sort the problem.

I think the issue is less about the capacity of the battery in Ah and more the CCA drops with time.

I changed the battery on my mkII for an original spec one and it has been fine.  If a 100Ah battery is the same physical size as the standard one then you could fit one but it will cost more and I don't think you would see any benefit.

Cheers mate, sorry about all the questions,  I have no idea when it comes to car battery's,

...I think the issue is less about the capacity of the battery in Ah and more the CCA drops with time...

Your battery is form factor 096. The local Golf TDI boys around here buy the following as it has a larger CCA. The reviews are good too.

I can see you have the battery box, so check the dimensions carefully.

Wifey has a 72ah battery on her 1.9pd seat if that's any help. Never had any issues with it though its only 6 years old!

I don't know what the reliability is like, but the Ah, CCA and form factor are correct for your car.

Update on this, I got a fitted a new battery this afternoon, not used the car much to not 100% sure if its fixed the issue. Will find out more tomorrow.

If the battery hasn't fixed the issue I guess the next thing is the starter motor.

Right used the car like normal today and the hot start issue is still there, even after fitted a new battery.

Starter motor? Or the wiring perhaps?

What do you mean by wiring mate?

Also I have had a look on the net about this and seem to be quite a common issue with VAG diesels, and seen that some have said it could be some to do with the standard map on the car might be able to cursed with a remap.

Anyone else heard of this or is it just bull?

I mean the wiring to the starter and the earth.

I thought the hot start problem was on some pd engines but I might be wrong.

Will check the wiring tomorrow weather permitting,

So does the engine crank normally when the engine is hot or does it crank fine but won't fire up?

Has the car been diagnosed with VCDS yet?

What is VCDS mate?

The car cranks over fine when hot, it just takes longer to fire up

Cable and diagnostics software that does the same as the dealer system.

Not had that done yet, don't know anyone local other than a dealer who could do it without charging a fortune

I have had a check of the wiring to and round the starter today and found this

image_zpscb99510e.jpg

It's the electrical connection that goes to the starter, the wires have started breaking. I have covered it in electrical tape for now but I know it's only a temp fix, not sure how I would fix as it's right next to the connection

So have you inspected the fuse box & cables on top of the battery? as the cables for the alternator & the starter motor have a suspect crimp joint that is notorious for failing.

As I stated at the start of this thread the CTS should always be investigated when there are temp related starting problems on VAG cars. CTS failure is extremely common on VAG cars, & if you have the old black CTS fitted you should change it regardless. Genuine VAG revised green CTS only, do not fit an aftermarket non genuine CTS or you'll be buying twice..

I am going to phone local breakers yards to see if they have any octavia tdi's in.

I have had a look for the CTS to see which one I have fitted but can't seen to find it, anyone got any ideas to where it's located?

Right hand off the engine as you look at it. It attached to one of the black coolant hoses and is inserted from the back. Mbames has put a picture on here somewhere with it circled.

I know the pic isn't the best but is this the CTS?

It's a 4 pin square plug but after looking on the net I thought the square pin was blue butkne looks green.
