are estates now in fashion?

Featured Replies

Not sure if it's just because I have one and is noticing it more, but there seems to be more estates on the road. And also alot more modified ones. I think the estate is turning into an epidemic like vw caravelles have. There are modified ones everywhere!

I haven't really noticed tbh, there still looks to be loads of people carriers around and suv's 4x4's. I buy whichever look's the better proportioned or the cheapest if there's a big difference on price. I actually prefer a nice neat looking 'three box' saloon but bought a Superb estate this time as it looked a more harmonious design. It replaced a Legacy saloon.

I often find once I have a car or look into a specific car, I start seeing it everywhere. Estates are popular due to their adaptability and space.

Any car nodding to family life is less desirable, an estate is no different.

Luckily I don't give a monkey what people think. I drive a Skoda after all!

Did the Estate/Kombi/Variant/Shooting-Brake ever go out of fashion?  :bandit:

You forgot Station wagon

I actually prefer the estate version of some models, I love the big arse on my old girl

The wife would kill me if I said that !

I get asked about why I have an estate since I'm 21, single and have no kids and when I answer that I prefer the looks of it to the hatchback they just look at me as if I'm mad. Plus it makes it a bit more of a 'sleeper'. Buying a car is a personal choice hence why there are so many differant cars to choose from. I do like a tastefully modified estate and there are some cars out there that I wouldn't own unless it was an estate, the Superb being a prime example. I just can't get on with the looks of the hatchback Superb - no offence ment to any Superb hatchback owners.

As already said, I think some cars look better in the estate models, the superb. . .I dont like the rear of the hatchback/twin door but think the estate looks awsome. . .

The mk2 fabia vrs estate I like too, as well as its lighter than the hatchback too, which I find bizarre. Haha

I have an e46 330 tourer as I prefer the looks massively over the saloon, some people aren't cool enough to pull off the estate thing

I prefer estates, didn't really need one when I got my Fabia though, and now can't afford to upgrade to an estate. Quite tricky with being a musician, I can get my bass rig and small PA rig in for pub gigs and some functions, but I've got some big gigs coming up over the next couple of weekends, and yep, I've had to hire a VW Caddy, just to get everything into what I could get into an estate.

Ho hum :(

To be honest I think all most all estates look better than their hatch/saloon counterparts. I'm on my

Second estate and doubt I'd go back to a hatchback. Much more versatile and look better.

I wanted the estate but the wife didn't, so we didn't get one.

'Avant',  'das blitzwagen', 'better than a saloon',

'cool and German' and really just an estate car version.

But some how actually cool and smart.

'Combi'  a rough looking works van or Crew bus, not really a suitable term for an Estate car.

Skoda Rapid 'Spaceback',

more room in the back seat than the hatchback, but less boot space

and not a Combi/Estate.

Audi Sportback,

bigger than a none Sportback with more doors. not an Avant/Combi/Estate.

Fairly sure a lot of travelling sales reps also have estates foisted upon them as company cars.  So if you are referring to seeing lots of estates on the Motorway, especially outside of the morning/evening commute I'd guess a fair few a sales/other reps.

They're easy to spot, they'll be doing 90 in the outside lane, steering with their knees, bullying any car they can out of their path whilst eating a Ginster's, trying to operate a laptop. and shaving.

Some will also hang pressed shirts in the rear windows, as I can see no other reason why they need to be on display I assume this is some kind of code for dogging.

Estates are just more practical!

I think the Audi S4 Quattro was the first fast estate that had any good design features, since then all manner of fast estates have appeared.  Of course the word Estate has died now , superseded by cooler names, crikey I've  got a Sportback or is it an estate

Whats worse... Station Wagon or Estate. When I think station wagon I think yank tanks with wood panels on the side thike the one danny glover has in lethal weapon.

'Shooting Brake'.  Mercedes seem to be wanting to revive that name.

Not about fashion, it looks better than the hatch

Agree some just look better. i.e most beemers, volvos and the superb.

I'll be going down the estate road next time.

Your forum name doesn't scream impartiality on this one though ;)

1. They look better than a hatch.

2. You can fit a lot more stuff in the back.
