Exhaust coming apart

Featured Replies

Was driving along normally on a national speed limit road when I decided to ford a large puddle at speed  :giggle:. Then something strange happened, the exhaust started really blowing unbearably. Pulled over somewhere safe to have a look and the joint that exits the middle box had come apart. :o  A quick jack up and a 13mm socket I manhandled to pipe back onto the box and tightened up the clamps.

As some of you will know I've had the engine replaced twice and forded many puddles in many different cars but never experienced this. Could this be because of bad workmanship or just a random occurrence. I have had a small bit of vandalism to the car over the week but had to jack the car up to reach the exhaust clamp so don't think this is the issue.

Has anybody else ever experienced this?

If you think it is not connected to having 2 Engine replacements,

which seem  most likely.

Hitting water at speed is never going to be without risk, and might well have just been enough to do this.

Has someone been try to steal your Catalytic converter?

They normally just cut them off though.

What type of Vandalism?

The car came with a CAVE engine and I believe its been the same with the replacement engines. The current replacement engine has only needed a liter of oil since its been fitted and i've done almost 2500 miles but the temp has dropped so I'm just waiting for the oil light to come on now.

As for the vandalism it was the rear wiper arm that was ripped off but I'm not passing up that the exhaust was loosed for rapid removal at a later date. Borrowing some axle stands at the weekend so I can safely crawl under the car and check all the joints.

Any reason you do not just open the bonnet and check the oil level?

Maybe try the 'Jabozuma way'.  This is what i use to check.

Cold engine, start the car, stop right away and see where the level is on the stick, the oil is now in the filter.

It may actually show the same level this way as when you do a Hot/Operating Temperature check.

Because I've had enough of the car and can't be bothered with it any more. And besides I can only check the oil when i'm at work due to the camber of the road I live on, and when you've spent 12 hours moving nasty bits of crap about London all I want to do is got home.
