Columbus/Mitsumi

Featured Replies

Hi, not sure if this has been covered before but has anyone else specced these 2 options separately? (Or, for that matter, just specced the Columbus but received the Mitsumi as well?) I ordered my vRS hatch with these 2 options but seem to remember reading somewhere that it is unnecessary to spec both as the Columbus comes with the Mitsumi as standard. Obviously if that's the case I'd like my £100 back from my dealer for a redundant Mitsumi option to spend on something else! Thanks in advance.

Hi I've got Columbus in my VRS but don't have the Mitsumi, it doesn't come as standard you have to order is separately if you want both otherwise you just get the normal USB and AUX sockets. Hope this helps

Ah, thanks for the info, that clears it up for me.

Maybe it's just me but I feel that any non-standard connectors (such as Apple choose to employ) should never be standard on any car. Skoda have done the right thing in making this an option.

Yes its just you.

Yes its just you.

You have stats?

Incorrect. Me too.

To cloud the waters a little: Now If you option the Columbus in the build your Skoda configurator, it makes the Mitsumi non-selectable.

This could make one think that it comes fitted with it.

I suppose its best to ask the dealer or SUK if it's another "mistake" or not.

Another merry-go-round!

No stats just the proper facts seeing this thread is about the Mitsumi option and not Apple devices.  The mitsumi connector (or MDI as it used to be called) is not Apple specific, its a specific connector on it own then then you just buy the specific lead for your device, if that's an ipod fine, or you can buy the USB lead or 3.5mm jack, all availble from your local VAG dealer.

IMO Mitsumi should be standard fit and then when you collect your new car your dealer gives you a choice of leads and you pick the one you want.

Or you could just have USB? :)

Or you could just have USB? :)

But the Mitsumi is the only thing VAG do that compatible with everything.

I think you'll find that the ICE thingy is compatible with everything already. Everything bar Apple's non-standard connectors that is.

As for your assertion (or fact if you like), that the Mitsumi is not Apple specific I must have mis-read the specification on the website where it says this:

'Mitsumi' Apple device connection

Or maybe I didn't.

A genuine question however - why would you need the Mitsumi for any other device?

How is the ICE compatible with everything is its not compatible with apple divices? You've contradicted yourself there a bit i think.....

Mitsumi isn't apple specific but you do need it for apple devices, but with the correct lead it's also compatible with USB or 3.5mm jack.  It's just the old MDI renamed, the MDI ipod lead in my mkII even said 'Mitsumi' in it.

My point being if you actually read my post was if they fitted it as standard and you just had to choose the lead you want then the car would be compatible with everything as standard.

So you would raise the price for everyone just to please the owners of non-standard devices?

ps - it's not a contradiction it's an exception to the rule.

I didn't mention raising the price...... even if they did it would probably be a few quid and no one will notice.

So you'd have me pay "even a few quid" just to make my car compatible with your device?

That's what happens when you own devices that don't comply with standards.

Never mind, there's an option available for you to buy, so don't get too frustrated.

From another forum post, (that I can't seem to quote properly);

"Well, after much consideration & choosing I've finally placed an order today to replace my company car Audi A5 (goes back at end of March 2014) and come back to a Skoda.

I've ordered a Skoda Octavia vRS 2.0 Petrol TFSI DSG 5-door Hatchback, Sprint Yellow paint, vRS upholstery with red seams.

Options :- spare wheel, black design pack, sunset glass, boot net, leather upholstery and heated seats, simply clever package, Canton sound system, Columbus navigation (includes Mitsumi Apple device connection & colour MaxiDot), cruise control, heated washer nozzles, KESSY keyless entry."

I think USB is pretty universal, wouldn't you say? :) Android, WP, BB and every other relevant device on the planet except Apple uses a variation of the USB port.

To be fair - this is more a Skoda/VAG issue than an Apple one. I had a Toyota Yaris rental from the dealer over the summer waiting for the Octy to arrive. I plugged my iPhone into it, with only the standard usb cable the iphone shipped with and everything just worked - meta data, albums playlists and album art all displayed and it even shared the data connection for real time traffic and POI search. No special interface required!

...which I think gets straight to the heart of the problem. VAG have invented their own connectivity system which is a) expensive, B) badly designed and awkward to use, and c) utterly pointless. Apple devices work fine with a USB connection in other cars, or with a combined USB and AUX in some. The sooner they drop this crazy MDI/MItsimi nonsense the better.
