Musings of a Mad Man: Mk2 Fabia VRS TDI...

Featured Replies

So I'm currently (and will be for some time...), considering a replacement for my Seat and thought... mmm, what if the Fab 2 VRS was diesel (due to all the reported problems with the 1.4 and the lack of manual it wouldn't meet my criteria, the Octy VRS is a little big for my needs).

So what about making a Fab 2 VRS TDI, I was thinking it could go something like this:

Buy donor car... 4year old 1.9 105 PD <40k owned by a little old lady to go down the shops

Coilovers, ARBs, poly bushes, drop links, strut brace all installed. No silly ride heights tho...

Wheels (if required, 16"s would be fine) and brakes (straight off a VRS or from another car? Would need to fit under the 16"s)

Then on to the engine, straight remap should get 140ish, DPF removed, but really more would be better. So, what can be done with the 1.9? DECAT, intake, turbo off a Ibiza 160? FMIC? Exhaust?

Exterior mods: None, sleeper style. Even better if its beige to start with :)

I know the 1.9 is old tech now, but its pretty reliable and I'm not too bothered about the lumpy torque delivery (its quite rewarding when you get it right).

Costs? Around £6k gets the car. 1.2k (?) on suspension and bushes if I can fit them myself then get them aligned, probably some basic coilies like APs... this isn't a track car. Brakes/Wheels £500 (second hand wheels and brakes). Engine: basic level remap £500, for 180bhp+ ... hmm not sure. Need to find out what would be required.

Silly idea?

I think 180bhp is pretty optimistic unless you have a bottomless pit

For that kind of money you could get a really nice 2007 Fabia mk1 VRS.

Rather than the more gawky looking mk2 a year or two newer.

I suggest you take a look at the fabia project threads.

Just a thought but a white elegance estate might be a nice starting point for making a really nice Mk2 vRS Diesel.

gawky looking mk2.

He wants a bogo granny version...

Well I did say musings of a mad man :P I was joking about the beige.. maybe a nice neutral silver. :P

is 180 not achievable from the 1.9PD, thought in 130 guise this was possible, not too much different from the 105 is there (only turbo, inter cooler?)? (willing to be corrected if it involves injectors etc).

Yes, it's not that difficult.

180 is fairly easy with parts from the 130PD.  200-220 is very nice and probably ideal but costs more.

After that it gets expensive.

For what it's worth I believe SEAT made a far better version of the mk2 VRS.

They do a 2.0 CR manual that I think has the 170 engine which maps straight to 205.  And you can get xenons too, unlike the mk2 Fabia.

But then you might have to frequent SCN, so clearly not even worth considering

Well, quite a few people buy other cars (some hethens even go non-VAG) and still hang around. :)

There is one dodgy character with two Nissans.

I think I'd rather just hang out here with an Ibiza :P

The Ibiza FR had slipped under my radar... I wonder if they fixed the ride in this version. Its a 140 CR tho rather than 170... hmm.

It maps to 175 though. :)

What about a Fabia Sport 1.9 with a remap?

PD105 fabia - Is there a "sport"?

Decat (or DPF delete depending on age) - PD150 hybrid turbo, PD130/PD150 injector units - 200bhp at least - safely.

Then I would personally recommend FMIC, clutch, EGR delete - Then other non engine rubbish like big brakes, uprated suspension/bushes.  Then a nice 220bhp is possible, without an engine swap = +100%

What about buying a donor scrapper - blown engine'd PD105 - And try a 2 litre PD TDI conversion :D

you could also consider putting in a small displacement petrol engine and wait for it.................add not only a turbo but a supercharger as well.  I fancy with a good map it would give dieselesque torque smashing power to weight ratio, belting acceleration and reasonable economy.

and I know I'm just getting really silly now but if you threw in one of those DSG gearboxes and some flappy paddles you could have a corking little motor.

It would also probably be highly tuneable, have cast iron reliability, no oil consumption................................

Wow, just think.  That'd feel like an F1 car. :giggle:  (so I heard)

It's like you read my mind.

0-60 thread anyone?

On the earlier mk2 Fabia the Sport is (for me) far better looking than the non-sport.

The stock early mk2 had the goggly headlights that soon got changed after a short period.

I'd still get the SEAT though.

then you could tune it up to 200bhp plus and add some anti-pursuit countermeasures

That is intentional right

SWMBO has a black 1.9 TDi - very nice too :)

I didn't think the PD got a DPF?

Also, why 16" wheels?  To keep some ride comfort?

It looks like it would be fun, but what's the cost of that, versus buying the cheapest 1.6 CR TDI you could, or is it just that the CR "only" remaps to 130-135?

Ha thats the can do attitude!! Don't think I'll be doing any engine swaps. 2.0PD was a bit of a funny one wasn't it, old reliable engine made slightly bigger and broken in the process...

Sparky, I could do that but I guess its a desire to make something myself and a bit different :P Plus I'm not sure on the 'cast iron reliability' bit... seems pot luck unless I bought one that from here that didn't think it was a 2-stroke.

PDIBK: Yep 16s for comfort, cheaper tyres and I think 17"s look too big on the Fabia. The difference in cost would only be for the PD150 turbo and injectors, hopefully the mapping company could go straight from 105 to silly rather than paying for 1,2,3.. maps. Coilovers, ARBs, bushes, brakes would be done anyway.

Its only a thought I had this morning, may not come to anything but its entertaining to think about these things while I save pennies towards my new car :P

Do it!!!!!

Atleast that would be an oil burning thread that doesnt make me want to kill myself in this section :D
