New skill to put on my CV

Featured Replies

New thing done today - Polished glass!  :D  It's an area I have steered clear on in the past, but after Dad got a kit over tut internet thing, I decided I would be the one to wield it, rather than let him use a drill as the kit was designed for.....

The kit comprised several 2.5" pads which looked more like make-up removal type of pads... (I was scepitcal right now) and a bottle of "glass polish" which I believed was something jewellers use - "Cerium Oxide" or something like that.  (See, I still have no clue.....)

Anyway, the instructions suggested a much faster speed than I use on paintwork, so I set my rotary polisher to speed 3.5 which was comfortably below the 2000rpm limit recommended, but still at least 50% faster than I would use on paint.

The mark in question has been on this A3 since it was bought.  It was caused as you would expect from some muppet not changing the wiper blade so there was a nice arc from the middle to the drivers top corner.  The polishing was done moving the polisher fairly slowly but steadily over the arc, so as not to cause excessive heat buildup which could easily have cracked the screen.  After not too long a battle and once the polish was dry - I buffed off with a different pad & polish and all was gone.  Very impressed indeed and a new feather in my cap!

And my biggest fail?.... NOT TAKING ANY PHOTOS!....  :o

I have a deepish scratch (your nail can catch in it) on my rear window. Do you thing this stuff has enough strength to reduce that?

Fraid I must call you a numpty for forgetting the photos lol

Modern windscreen glass is soft and polishes fairly easily as well as chip!!

Mine is covered in pinprick sized chips

I'm hoping it will crack so that the Insurance will replace it FOC and without claim loss (In the Policy)

Jason....Do you have a link for buying the Kit?

He would have been asked to sod off to 'Detailing World' instead though.   :giggle:

My local detailing wizard didn't want to polish my windscreen as it makes the screen uneven and the wipers won't clear it properly..... Or some none-sense.

Pictures or it didn't happen!!

My Dad bought it, but I have the left over pads & bottle of gunk at home so I shall try and find it.  he bought it off Amazon for about £20 apparently.

Jewellers Rouge, Jase ;)

I have some Cerium Oxide that came as part of a kit with a windscreen sealant. It's applied by hand (or you can use a DA for polishing) just to give the screen a proper, thorough deep clean. The wife's Golf has a scratch on the nearside front window, so I might try a kit or a DA/rotary pad to see if it will come out.

Same stuff, different name :D

For an actual proper scratch you can feel with your fingernail I don't think this will work - or at least not without a serious amount of polishing / time spent, and I would be worried about heat buildup - maybe best to just do repeated polishes between cool down periods.

The marks on the A3 windscreen I did could barely be felt with a fingernail at all - They were more like scuffs from something rough being scrapped across the surface rather than an actual deep scratch. :)

No, you let me know when you're on holiday on the East Devon coast!  :P

haha, damn I'll not be going on holiday for a long while now... i had seen a post about using metal polish on windscreens by hand, but didnt want to completely ruin my windscreen. - think it was by some detailing company in Oz or something like that.

Mine looks like it have streaks from the wipers on the glass, but it looked like that after i have fully washed the car and used autoglym glass polish, so i think it needs something extra. its not noticeable at all really until its dark and the light shines over/through it.
