engine flush. good or bad

Featured Replies

will be servicing my car in the next 6000 miles (Octavia 1.6 tdi cr. 44000 k with full skoda history). Is using an engine flush good for the engine prior to an oil change? some garages like them, some don't. which is the best product to use? I would be concerned about using one on a high mileage engine, but an engine with low miles and history would be relatively clean and free from sludge/crud. I am planning on keeping my car for the 5 - 6 years and want to keep it in the best possible condition. Your thoughts.

Nope,, wouldn't use any sort of engine flush product, I used it years ago on my Fiesta XR2 after which the sump gasket started leaking,''Badly''.. Regular oil and filter changes using good quality oil is all that should be required

I use this every time and even if the car is new or old, it is also used by the guys at CentralVWAudi the independent garage I use.  Has done no harm at all over the years but does keep all those little capillaries clear to keep the engine in tip top condition

I wouldn't.  Dealers often do it because the variable service intervals are ludicrously far apart, and they can charge you another £30 or so for the privilege.  It would be better to change the oil at half the intervals (say every 9,000 miles).

I got my Skoda engine flushed by VAG specialist along with oil service.

Yes do a engine flush, It will remove all the sludge build up in the engine and the sump. Use a brand like Forte, Just make sure the engine is already warm before you put it in and never rev the engine when it's in or you will be looking for a new engine. Even with modern oils you will be shocked how much sludge build up an engine can have, especially cars running for two years between services.

I have a 230K Mondeo and it has never been flushed.

Petrol that is.

Loved mine too F344FGT red with pepper pots, can't for the life of me remember why I flogged it..

Use of a good fuel and modern oils, as well as few short journeys - wouldn't bother - complete waste of money.

(currently at 108K miles - never been flushed and never will).

I never use them either, yes they release the sluge in the sump but that's the danger. The sluge is then free to clog up the oil filter which could force open the pressure release valve meaning unfiltered sluge going through the oil pump and oil galleries resulting in pressure problems.

Treatments are meant to keep clean engines clean not clean dirty engines.

Don't mean to change the subject, but is that a Dodge Charger on your profile pic?

If you use a "good" engine flush, you don't have to worry about sludge in the filter. For one it won't get past the filter on the oil pump and two the flush breaks everything down to a very watery liquid. If you jack the car so the sump is down hill draining and leave it for a couple of hours, you will be shocked what comes out an engine once flushed. The myth behind modern fuels and oils not causing this, is just a myth. Like any internal combustion engine over time you will get sludge build up in the sump and engine parts, and also carbon build up in the head, you can't stop it. Since it's now common for cars to do 20'000 miles between services and most have turbos, i think oil flushing is a good idea. Especially going by what I have been told by a company who recons turbos that most turbo failures are due to oil starvation.

I always feel better after a good flush out
