Craig's vrs (slow build) family car project

Featured Replies

Hi to all, as some may have read I'm new to the whole octavia and vag world an this is my new and first car within the group.

I am it's proud owner as of last Saturday, only driven it home at present as still using the mg until its ready for sale but gives me a chance to tackle some of the Octys little issues before letting her loose on the roads lol.

By no way a mint example but not too bad considering age, mileage and how little I know about these cars (only found the buyers guide after I bought it :( )

Anyhow will post more updates once I can afford to start playing with her a bit more and have more things to show along the way. Not going to be a big thread as haven't the money to make it that interesting but it will be as nice as I can make it at the end of the day :)

Here it is at home before a quick clean

And only 2 from after the clean but before mopping the bonnet as the rain was hiding what state it was in when I viewed the car :(

Am hoping to make this at least a little worth while reading over time but ill be honest it's not going to be an amazing read as it'll be quite a reasonable time between things being done.

Guess just an excuse to show another red one for the team :D

After just reading your entire build thread I'm not so sure I do now.. You and me seem to have similar luck when it comes to cars so maybe I should just sell it on now lol :)

It's also made me want to spend lots and lots of money I don't really have spare :(

Builds are always good reads bud :)

You'll get there, but watch out.

Cos i tell ive told folk before ...... Red ones bite :D

oh dear you read a build thread :x you dont realise now but your car is well on its way to the floor with 300bhp :D

the bad luck adds to the journey i guess :wonder:

also blame lloyd it all started with his build thread, mine would still be standard without that thread :D

oh and dont forget rob king of reds!!

I hadn't got around to reading the others by this point but yes after reading a few more I can see the £ signs fluttering before my eyes :(

I doubt ill get to 300 as will take ages for me but wouldn't say no to a nice 230/240. See what happens I guess but I think the mrs is going to ban me reading threads now as getting carried away lol.

The cars are great though, especially when Red.!!

Slow n steady mate, you'll get there

Stage 2 is a nice marker point :)

Well I'm hoping so :)

Yeah I think of starters a stage 2 car would be nice. It's totally standard at present and drives very well but I've seen a few choice bits I want to add but am just trying to choose an exhaust as not sure what make to go for as I haven't heard many with nice aftermarket systems and do love a popping exhaust on overrun :D

It will get there... Eventually.

Welcome to the forum and here it starts as terkin said we'd all be standard if it wasn't for Lloyd.

This forum is great for fixes and help with problems, but reading build threads should have a warning about adverse effects on your bank balance.

Thanks for the welcome and yes, I shouldn't have read the build threads and I'm banning myself from reading any more for the next week or so asy list of "things to do" has grown drastically since buying the car 2 weeks ago.

I've gone from exhaust, induction and slightly lower to and ever extending and more thorough list with turbo back system, front mount, adjustable coilovers and arbs over just springs, updated brakes, forge goodies and then the list just goes on.

Really want to get it looking nice as bit rough round the edges but by no means a dog which is good.

I don't think my bank balance will last long at all at this rate. Just need to pace myself with the mod front :)

Yeah I would agree slow and steady on the mod front, best advice I can give is to sort the little niggles then move on to the mods.

Well funds won't allow me to go full on into the modding unfortunately, the bits will get done in due course though.

Luckily there aren't too many niggles that really need sorting mechanically so once they are done its then mainly cosmetic so I can pick and choose which I want to do first or what fits in best.

We will get there :D

Ok, first update.

It's a little one but its the only "cheap" mod I've been able to do at present so here we go.

I have always liked the smoked headlight look and had them on previous cars and did my mg the same. So with having nice smooth head lamps I thought it'd be nice to start off the black and red theme with a bit of lamp tinting.

As she was before I started

Then after fly eyes applied

Only a slight difference and was a relatively cheap mod but I apologise about the picture quality.

Anyway, first part of the modding process begins :D

It looks great. But, how about visibility?

It looks great. But, how about visibility?

Well yes this is going to be the deciding factor this evening. I've done it on previous head lights before and never had any issues with visibility but I'm not expecting them to be great at present until my uprated bulbs come through and then should be sound.

If however its terrible I will end up taking it off. Bonus is that its road legal and mot compliant film so on that front it's all good :)

Looks good I've got the rears done been thinking about the fronts yours have just swung it for me. What did you use on the fronts ?

  • Author

Cheers ;) I have have done the rears but only the clear sections (reverse and indicator) but the stuff I used was flyeyes.

They state it's road legal and mot compliant and on my previous cars it has never had issues and has always previously passed mot's so I don't see there being a problem.

Need links posting for this fly eye stuff

Hey :D

The lights look good mate, i keep looking at my reversing lights ,

I got the lamin-x

No holes but where i run a hid kit it takes the edge off

Whats next ? :) black grill ?

Makes a big difference, have fly eyes on my VRS love the look :)

I can never get my phone to actually post the links up when I try to copy them over.

All I did was out fly eyes in the bay search screen and loads came back up. Got a huge sheet, 110cm by 95cm I believe.

I really wanted to use lamin-x for the cleaner finish but as I wasn't sure if I was going to like the look of it I didn't want to spend that much on buying it to then possibly take it off the next day.

Lamin-x looks the nuts though.

Waiting for my HIDs to turn up as in fairness the standard bulbs with it aren't all that great now after going out last night, not dangerous and still show up but just not quite so crisp.

I want a black grill but I'm no good at wrapping shapes, I just never get a decent finish and my spraying isn't all that either :(

Will finish the front off nicely though I think ;)

Yeah a huge difference. Does look very aggressive.

My mates got it today and the first thing he threatened to do was take it all off as he hates that sort of thing. I then followed by saying if he wanted his new car and courtesy car un sign written to go ahead :)

He's a good mate but doesn't always accept that people like different things :(
