Any reason why not?

Sorry folks but what are you talking about.

Well in my eyes, although it may not matter much, i would still use the correct oil for my tdi, the smallest of changes can make a huge difference say blow the oil feed pipe or something, not to say it would do damage or that, but on the off chance it does, i just wouldn't, not worth risking it

TDi's are very fussy about which oil they like. I only ever use the correct VAG/ Škoda spec oils. I read the cams dislike lesser oils.

Mines not a tdi

Mines not a tdi

I still wouldn't

I wouldn't either - oil specifications are there for a reason and I wouldn't risk my engine for the sake of saving a few pounds on oil

Well save on a few quid, or a new engine ? Tdi's or Petrols, same problems if wrong spec is used, fawked engine at worse.

Fawked engine from half a litre? Mixed with 4 litres of the correct stuff? Very extreme dont you think

The VW specs are a lot cleaner to start with. Grade is not the only consideration. The amount of crap particles in there is also a big factor in wear, and if you care about the life of your engine, and intend to keep it for any great length of time you should treat it a bit kinder than any old crap. I always use the longlife VW oil, which is pretty cheap from TPS in bulk, and I still change it every 6,000 miles or so. But then I'm hoping this old charabang will last a long time in my ownership.

Apologies folks. My dyslexia cut in and on the 1st post i seen wd40 instead of 5w40 and it totally threw me lol

Half a litre ain't gonna make a sh*# of difference probably more than that sits in the sump when you drain the oil.

I have to agree that probably half a litre may not made a difference. But why bother. Just get the right grade. And for even buying asda oil at the correct grade gives me shivers.

My OCD just would never allow me to do it. Oil is the key lubricant for the life of the car.

Yes but it is not the same oil sitting in the sump when it is pumping around the engine. I.e just the separated wrong grade just stuck there. ( if that makes sense)

Just coz it is left there when drained has nothing to do with when it is moving over parts. Sent from my Samsung S3

It is the correct grade that i use 5w40. Meets plenty of the other specs just doesnt mention vw specs. I cant see any harm either way

If it don't mention it,  it don't meet it.....

There probably a good reason VW don't approve it.

These Turbo cars run very hot and the 1.8T engine need top quality oil,  not some supermarket home brew even if it is correct grade...

so really it is not just half a litre as the other 4 litres i would not put in either

It's your car buddy and you seem to "want to" but your post was "would you" I would not and looks like most others would not either.....

The halfords own brew that i also put in does meet the correct VW specs. Well either way i changed the oil this morning and i dont expect any problems. It gets changed every 5000 miles anyway

How much is a litre of the correct stuff? £10? Not worth it for me no matter how tiny the chance of issues. It'd annoy me knowing the wrong stuff is in it if nothing else. You'd be better doing 10,000 mile changes with the correct oil than 5,000 with whatever you can find IMO of course.

I do 5000 changes no matter what oil i use anyway always have done

Don't do it. Different oils use different additives. Some may even react with each other, or cancel each other out.

Missing my point, what good is 5000 mile oil changes if you're putting the wrong stuff in.

It either meets the spec or it doesn't. Simple as that.

The spec is there for a reason; so you have confidence that the oil you buy is suitable for the intended purpose and meets a minimum standard.

Like others have said though, it's your car... and your risk. It makes no difference how frequently you're making oil changes - incorrect oil is being pumped, whether that's for 1 mile, 100 miles, or your self-imposed 5000 mile interval.

I wouldn't mix different oils. I'm pretty sure someone once told me the long life oil doesn't mix very well with normal oil. Its the different additives that's put in.
