Fitting Powerflex Diesel (Red) engine mount insert this weekend.

Will post up some pics and a short review once its in, I'm not expecting massive improvements but we shall see what we get.

Like to see how you get on, is this generally to improve throttle response and smooth out gear changes?

Improves traction and makes gear changes more solid. Works quite well.

Well its fitted and I must say I am very suprised!

The bouncing and banging that you get if you accidently spin it up has gone. it breaks away easier in the wet but its easier to put the power down in the dry.

Gear changes are greatly improved also, much smoother on the move.

The only negative I have noticed is when reversing it can be a bit louder with a bit more vibration than normal but careful clutch control can almost cure that.

Method of fitment:

1) Ensure you have the correct insert for your year 504 or 704 etc.

2) The bolt is a stretch bolt- Part No: N10558002 (Thanks to Dan4291) the powerflex kit includes the washers.

3) Drive car onto ramps to raise front end and chock the rear wheels.

4) Grease the insert with grease provided or similar as they dont give you much!

5) I then used a trolley jack and a block of wood to force the insert into the mount before undoing the bolt to stop it all moving about once undone.

6) Lower and remove trolley jack and undo the 21mm Bolt

7) put new bolt through large washer (inc in kit) then the smaller washer (inc in kit) then insert and tighten it up to correct torque setting.

8) the large washer is same size as the insert and sqaushes it into place nicely.

Over all a very easy job to do on the driveway and all in was less than 15 minutes including sorting tools etc.

Hope this helps someone.

Any chance you could post up the pics please. Also is your a manual or DSG because I am considering this for my DSG.

Agreed it does make the gear changes more solid.

The only negative I have noticed is when reversing it can be a bit louder with a bit more vibration than normal but careful clutch control can almost cure that. - Really mine vibrated that much that my fillings in my teeth nearly fell out. I have only had it in about an hour and it has turned a quiet, smooth pleasurable car into a vibrating noisy piece of ****. I will be removing it and sending it back tomorrow. This bush may be acceptable for track days or circuit use but it is not for normal road use, it really was horrible. When I tried to reverse out of the drive passersby were looking think it was going to explode it was vibrating that much. How could one bush make a car so noisey !!!.

BTW this bush is not that easy to fit either, its a P.I.T.A. However make sure if you are going to fit one you follow the instructions as listed.

How much are we looking at here and can you post a link to where is the best place to acquire one please young sir?!

Seriously - Don't do it unless you don't mind your car vibrating like the worst piece of **** you have ever driven. It was like driving round with a jack hammer in the boot, I had to turn the radio up really loud just to even hear it.

I am waiting for an answer from the bloke I bought it from, if he won't take it back I will sell you mine.

Sure you've not over tightened any if the bolts radders? Over-torquing them can really increase vibration.

Don't think so. The bolt when removed was pretty tight (as there is only one in the centre). I didn't use a torque wrench, I just did it up tight enough not to fall out as I drive along.

Are we talking about the DOGBONE engine mount here or this:

http://www.powerflex.co.uk/road-series/product-details/Lower+Engine+Mount+Insert+%28Large%29+Diesel+/1870.html

There must be an issue there somewhere, all your doing is replacing a rubber bush so if done properly as per instructions it should be fine. If the old one has worked fine but now has a little play due to age why won't this improved Powerflex bush do the same job if not better? I'm pretty sure Powerflex have not designed these upgrade parts to be worse than OEM!

We're talking about the 704 not the dogbone.I have just removed it (in about 60 small bit BTW as it was a right PITA to get back out). The car is now back to normal and does not vibrate at all. The powerflex insert fills the void - hence transmitting the vibrations more. As stated before it would be ok for track use but not for an every day car, it would drive me mad.

You definitely used the red insert? I used the red insert (504 one) and it was fine, just increased vibration on idle and when maneouvring. Shame you've had problems with it, wonder if the 704 is maybe a bit too harsh for the CR engines.

Maybe - My car is smooth and vibration free. Only because the insert bush is in small pieces in the garage.

Are there other options then? The reason I'm asking is because I'm getting a little bit of jerkyness during gear change and a notchy gear change from 1st and 2nd and vice versa. Apart from a gearbox oil change im looking for options after having a new clutch and dmf just before the summer.

Is yours a manual ?

Gearbox oil change is relatively cheap and easy to do - would explain notchiness but not jerkiness. DMF's do seem to be made of a toffee like substence, both of my last two cars needed their DMF's replaced when I got them.

This has to be the worst modification I have ever done to any of my cars!

The reason I got one of these fitted was due to the fact that I had a Milltek DPF delete bypass pipe installed and to validate the warranty Milltek insist that one of these, or similar, was fitted. Before ordering, I read this post, and was hoping that I wouldn't experience the same issues as radders567, but to my horrior, my worst nightmare was realised. I went for the Powerflex 704R as it was cheaper than other brands and had better reviews.

I used my local, trusted, mechanic to carry out the install. My first experience was starting the car and driving it off the ramp, fresh after install, and on start straight away I could feel the massive vibrations and hear the horrible noises. I decided to give it a go and the following day, through gritted teeth, carried out my 100 mile round trip to work. Having safely arrived at work I straight away phoned my mechanic to book the car in and have the 704R removed, that evening! That drive had to be the worst ever experienced and I was dreading having to drive home. The car vibrated and juddered in every gear, even under acceleration, and when attempting to pull away from junctions it sounded like, and felt like, the car was going to fall apart! The vibrations appeared to get worse the more I drove the car. When reversing the car it juddered so violently that I thought I was going to damage something.

The only one bonus from this is that under hard acceleration the car felt solid and that I was able to use all the power when overtaking, but I wasn't prepared to live with the above issues.

I was so relieved when my mechanic was able to remove the offending item, in about 7 pieces, and have never felt so happy when driving the car home.

Guess I'll just have to live with the consequences if I have any issues with my Milltek pipe because there was no way I was going to live with the consequences of fitting a Powerflex pff85-704R.

Nuff said.

Sorry to hear you had pretty much the same experience as me - the company I bought it from said they have never had any complaints and it was just me. They also asked me if I had fitted it right and were there any other problems such as worn engine mounts. Of course I have fitted it right and yes I had checked the engine mounts. I also had to have a dental check up because that red insert nearly rattled my fillings out. LOL  :D

From what I've just seen on the Powerflex website there are 3 types, Yellow 504 for petrol, Red 504R for Diesel and Blue 504P for track use. Could the yellow not be used on the diesel and possibly generate less vibration?

No a yellow would make vibrations worse again.

A diesel has far more vibration than a petrol, so the red bush will be softer to help soak up the vibes. The yellow will be stiffer as petrole vibrate less

Good point there Josh, I'll put my brain in gear next time because somewhere in my head that fact eluded me lol!

My experience wasn't quite that bad, but it wasn't a pleasant one!

I've sent Powerflex an email with my findings/concerns, so I'll see if they come back to me. Failing that I'll get in touch with the company I brought it from. To be honest I don't expect to get anything but, if you don't ask you don't get.

I got a refund from my supplier.

There has to be something going on with fitting as I've had a Red one fitted for a while now and have not noticed any of the things mentioned in this thread.

Weird.

I am a fully registered vehicle mechanic with over 20 years experience in the motor trade, I can assure you there was nothing wrong with the fitting.
