Ha Ha, C'mon Paul stop being so "Shelf-ish"!!

Having made MDF shelves in the past, would there be sufficient interest if I was to make something for the RS boys n girls?

How much would you pay? Would you want it carpetted? Would you want cutouts ready for any speaker in particular?

Calum,

IIRC, fab16v has built a MDF & Carpet replacement rear shelf - although I don't think he attached it too well :D Might be worth getting his POV on how easy (or not) the process was...

its my birthday in a few weeks and i am taking oyu out for yours?;)

its easy, if you are used to playing with MDF.

I built one for the saxo (plain and simple) and one for the ZX (split folding, and incorporating sunblind and retractable strings) quite fun to make up.

i want one with neons... have made them before (ax / civic mondeo)

Paul, I appreciate the offer of taking me out for my birthday, but I've told you that dress is too small and the wig really itches - and one more mention of PVC and I'm going to start ignoring your calls.

:D

suit yourself.. Ashley will take your place then.... and the dress fits her.....:p

Paul, you have to stop buying childrens clothes - everyone is aware you have no kids and the local mothercare is getting suspicious.

:D

you liked the tiger costume... (well sandra did..)

i dont buy them elly does... im unable to enter mothercare cos of my restraining order.;)

I have indeed and it was actually quite easy as the Fabia shelf is pretty flat. Not too sure about the Octy.

Just place your old shelf over the MDF sheet and draw round it. Then cut it out with a jigsaw. Cut the holes for the speakers with the supplied templates in the speaker box with same jigsaw. The fitting of the carpet is the tough bit, but too bad bad with a bit of time and patience.

Personally I think using spray glue on the top side of the shelf and staples to hold the folded bits to the underside is best. Didin't use the staples on the Fabia and it's starting to come away! Also a good idea to drill a hole either side, so your can fit a dowel of some kind to hold the shelf in the original clips. Another thing I didn't do as I rushed it!

Anyway, lessons learned and when I get time, might do another one. Properly this time though! Also another little bit of advice is to use 18mm MDF and not the 15mm as I used. It sags a bit in the middle.

Hope this has helped a bit and is not too foncusing! :D

Reckon the Octavia shelf could be made flat, though I'm not too sure on the sagging aspect, as it is a pretty big shelf. It also has a metal ridge across it to make it more sturdy, so pretty beefy MDF might be needed. Or another type of wood...

Rob.

I used spray adhesive on top and staples underneath when I added the carpet to the false "floor" for the sub & amp... held like you wouldn't believe!

Why bother putting speakers in the rear shelf?

For the better sound just go for front components, with a sub in boot and amp.

I can tell you, with something of good quality, you'll never need rear speakers.

Having chatted to some of the competition boys last week who REALLY take this thing seriously, there was not a single 6x9 to be seen anywhere in sight!

Hope this doesn't throw too much of a spanner in the works!!:asthanos:

but thats not a lot of good for those of us for whom speed is the key issue not sound... a shelf is easier to remove than an amp and box?

For you or a thief? :D

Considering the size of an Octy shelf, if a thief managed to get it out I think they'd have earned it! :D

Rob.

I always built \ fit subs with the thinking "if they can get this out, and run off with it, they deserve to keep it!"

The trick is make it millimetre perfect, so it just fits, then carpet it with Rockford Fosgate carpet - makes it snug to say the least! I have never made a sub enclosure that you could take out via the boot :D

Aren't you too old for Subs, Ian? ;)

Totally agree there! After fitting the 7x10's in the shelf, they overpowered the sub. Have since removed the sub and while I was at it, the spare wheel too! Made an amazing difference to throttle response and pickup!

What use is a 14" spare when you have 17" wheels! :D

What if you have a puncture? I'd be keen to remove my 14" spare as I have 17s on the car, but its always the, "what if?"

I'm gonna get some of that get you home spray mouse from halfords or somewhere like that! Supposed to work well. If it's good enough for supercars, it's good enough for me! :p

 I just cannot take the risk for the 15kg or whatever a wrapped 14" steel weighs
