Amusing electric mirror fault

Featured Replies

I've sorted out all my big recent problems, but yesterday I found a fault whilst adjusting electric mirrors.

I sometimes adjust my left mirror so as not to kerb the rear left wheel when reversing, but I adjusted the right and found that the left also followed. I'm guessing just a dodgy switch?

That might be a coding option. I'm sure I've read that early cars had that setup.

Depends on the switch you have, some adjust the L+R separately and others adjust L+R together and L separately :)

Yep My 2002 SDI Estate has mirrors that are like that. Never understood the reasoning for it.

Would be interested to see if its possible to just fit the more modern switch to have both mirrors independent.

Doesn't sound deliberate - I have been told that the convenience modules on VAG cars can act up and strange things occur...

Could be linked to electric windows acting funny - but I am by no means an expert, so can't back it up.

Mines the same too.

Have a look at your switch, if it looks like this

$T2eC16RHJHcFFkB!wvffBRfWpSKnp!~~60_35.J

Then its supposed to work that way.

Or it has a later switch fitted to an earlier model as it broke........

Golfs do the same thing, seen it on my brothers car.

Mine does it also, my switch looks like the above so is ment to though.

From the Manual; does anybody read them

Position L

-Alter position of left and right exterior mirrors at the same time (applies to models fitted with power windows)

-Alter position of left exterior mirror (applies to models not fitted with power windows)

Position R

To adjust the right-hand mirror, hold the rotary knob in position R.

I guess it helps if both can be pointed downwards simultaneously for bay parking.

That seems like a really odd idea. My switch has the heated mirror in the middle, right at the top, left at the bottom. So right adjusts both intentionally... Seems really strange but I will check the manual again. Only reason I didn't is because I honestly thought it was broken

Perfectly normal, mine does the same

I believe I've read on this very forum that the idea is that if you have two drivers with rather different leg lengths, when the driver's seat is moved back and forth to suit each person, the mirrors will both need adjusting to suit the forward or back position of the seat.  This way both can be done at once.
