1.9 tdi oil consumption

Featured Replies

Evening,

I am mr. OCD with my cars. Just wondering how much oil people's 1.9 tdi pds use. Had to put a smidge in mine this week after the oil level light came on. It has done quite a few short journeys recently.

How often do people find they have to top theirs up?

Thanks

Hi Jim, i've owned mine from new (Fabia 3, 1.9 TDI, 2008) and never had to top it up so far.

It's done just under 55'000 miles now

I had a 1.9 PD in a Passat, it used 1 litre of oil every 7,000 miles, it did this from brand new until I got rid after three years with about 140k miles on it.  They are ok to use a bit.

I've never had to top up my 2005 1.9TDI between services (every 10,000 miles).

Thx gents. Well mine took a little after 2k. I reckon it would equate to maybe half a litre over 10 so I reckon ok. I'm pleased that there is a low oil warning.

Ultra sonic. I am jealous of your mpg figures. Do you drive at 60 all day long?

My 2004 fabia vrs 1.9tdi from 6k through to 108k (9 years) use just shy of a litre every 10k, could read it like a book, consistent use every 10k, it was maped as well so working a bit harder at times than the standard 130bhp it left factory with, great engine from my experience!!

Our Octavia Mk1 with the 1.9TDI used quite a lot of oil for the first 20,000 miles and then it pretty much stopped.

Thanks. I think my average mpg is pretty typical for my age of car, and it will do 55 mpg at 70 mph on motorways runs pretty easily. But if you're looking at some of my higher mpg refuels, yes, those that are over 60 mpg will all have included some long distance driving at 60 mph. I do this when I have time, but will sometimes still drive at 70 or 80 mph. I've also been using BP Ultimate diesel since the start of September which has helped. Before this the best I'd managed was ~65 mpg for a couple of long runs at 60 mph in hot summer weather. I'm guessing the Ultimate has cleaned the injectors and that if I now switched back to cheaper fuel I'd keep most of the benefit, but I haven't tried this yet. My car has done about 93,000 miles BTW.

I'd have a higher average if it wasn't for my 9 mile daily work commute. I do work at trying to drive this route as efficiently as I can but it is not ideal, in terms of both the engine warming up and all of the roundabouts, traffic lights and general traffic.

SWMBO's Seat has the same engine and it's always used some. I've never actually kept records on how much on a regular basis but I recon it uses somewhere between half and one litre between its 10k services. She doesn't drive with economy in mind, the car has a go pedal and a stop pedal and they tend to be either on or off! Its used mainly for a 15 mile commute into Birmingham which probably doesn't help either so I'd say you've got nothing to worry about. Cheers

Thanks for the info people. I'll try a few tanks of fancy diesel.

With regards oil consumption I should perhaps add that when I say I've never had to top up my oil between services, what I mean is that the oil level has remained within the hatched area on the dipstick. What level of oil use this implies I'm not sure. Anyone know how much oil it takes for the level to go from the top to the bottom of this region?

I also had a 1.9 PD, but in a Passat Estate- it also used 1 litre of oil ~every 7,000 miles, it did this from brand new until I got rid after eight years with about 140k miles on it.
