Daytime driving lights

Featured Replies

I have read that after January 1998 some Felicia cars were fitted with daytime driving lights, different from dip beams.

relay R6, once used as side lights warning buzzer (then fitted on PCB of dashboard), became the relay for daytime driving lights.

I would like to know the following:

a) where are daytime driving lights located?

B) how do they look like?

c) what switch turns them on?

If they were "proper" DRLs then there would be no manual on/off switch. The concept is (even in those days) that the car would be automatically lit. I would highly doubt any LED technology was around at the time for that as well.

Maybe the Swedish models had them, as the Swedes have/had a law which required the car to be lit at all times whilst the engine was running. However, most of that was achieved by the sidelights being used, instead of the expense of design (and 'E' approval) of additional units.

given there is a separate relay for DRLs I guess it is not BMW or Audi type...

The wiring diagram that I have is showing that DRLs relay gets energized when ignition key is on. The relay is turned off when side lights switch is engaged. Sadly, there is no clear indication what lamps are used for DRLs.

My father had a few Volvos in the 80s and 90s and the running lights on those were in the sidelights using a twin filament bulb the same as a stop / tail light. Day running lights used the brighter light and it changed to the other when the sidelight switch was turned on.

A similar solution would be elegant but I don't think the Felicia sidelight is a size available as a twin.

before talking about DRLs upgrade let's try to find out what power lights chose Skoda to use so they needed a relay.

adurer, can you post the wiring you have for DRLs please?

Not seen a W5W as a twin at  any time, would make the supply-side connector need to be far more precise than it has been. Liking the idea of dual-filament / dual-brightness sidelight though. :)

If such an option actually existed, I'd suggest tackling the physical before the electrical: What/where were the bulbs mounted? Retro-fitting the electrics is the easy part. (no point in scratching around for relays and wiring if you don't actually know where you're going to put them).

I made my own loom for mine when I did electric head light adjuster buy adding a 5pin relay and when lights used drls turn off found round drls fitted in the mk2 fogs.... and in past fitted side light bulb holders in blinkers

uma1998, I can't understand anything from your reply.

can you explain again?

I have solved the mystery of DRLs on Felicia by reading more carefully the wiring diagrams (see below a compilation I made)

First of all, there are NO separate lights for DRLs. It's the dip beam of the headlights that is used. Relay R6 has NOT the role of switching on separate high power DRLs, but to not make possible having lit both dip beam and high beam simultaneously.

Basically the circuit works like this:

- during daytime: when the driver starts his car, dip beam is automatically lit (as long as side lights and dip beam switches are not on). If the driver selects high beam, dip beam is automatically turned off.

- during night time: when side lights and dip beam are turned on, DRLs circuit is turned off and the car lights return to normal operation.

Now it would be interesting to find an elegant way to fit LED lights as DRLs for Felicia without being cheap copies of other car makes and without ruining the classic look of the car. From my point of view, this means fitting LED bulbs instead of fog lamp bulbs, given the fact I don't drive when it's fog.

As above.

Pic off my 6k drl's in the fogs looks oem and they dim at night

Mine has the pre-facelift fogs. I would bet it's possible to set them up with a twin filament bulb relatively easily.

I put side light bulbs/ holders in the indicators and had them as drl's I now have the fun and going to convert the fogs to the mk2 fogs but have my drls in there

I guess what was on my Felicia wasn't very OEM????  :giggle:  :giggle:  :giggle:  :giggle:

(IgnitLive: Wiper Motor, Indicator Live (middle), Sidelight Live (middle>to dim), Battery earth)

AFAIK front lights should be in pairs. 2 headlights, 2 fog lights, 2 DRLs. Your DRLs are a good match for your tinted rear windows.

In our country adurer some people don't care and do things not buy the law and have taste. you stick to your law on your country as we do get pulled over and sweet talk out off it... come mot time they get proper mot's

Funny, I can see the lights mounted in pairs on the front of Lee's car.

Lee: am liking the lights behind the grilles beside the fogs, nice touch. :) Am I reading the description that they're dimming ones too? If so, which kit did you use?

That's correct! They are strip LEDs with the 3M backing to mount, just mold round the edges.

Similar but not the same: EBayID: 200761913762

Adurer: I don't see how tint comes into this though? Everyone has their own preference on how a car should look and I like tint/led DRL on any car, therefore my Felicia had it and my VectraC has it. Nothing illegal about any of it as it passed 2 MOTs as is, nothing removed or disabled/never been pulled by an traffic officers.

Everyone has his own preference and everyone has the right to an opinion. So what is the need to tint rear windows anyway? I mean other than transporting hookers on the back seat.

Privacy glass as it's known.

Can have people sleep in the back whilst I'm driving and they know they can't be seen, (such as kids)

Cooler in the summer.

Can keep personal belongings in the back without wandering eyes peering in.

Glass doesn't shatter/harder to break into.

Helps with daytime/nighttime glare

Need I go on?

Lee.

It's not a shame to be seen when sleeping, kids are angels. As an adult, sure, drooling, snoring, show metal fillings, etc. is disgusting

Cooler in the summer.

That's an illusion with other 3 big windows not tinted. Only A/C lowers the temperature.

Tinted windows can't keep thieves out. Remote locks and special anti-shatter foil, sure. By 'personal' I hope you referred to valuables, not the wedding photo or condoms, naughty boy :)

See above.

How about sunglasses during the day and yellow lens glasses during the night? You can't have both less glare and same visibility anyway.

Need I go on?

Yes, please. There's somebody dyeing to see how far things will go and he's drooling with a bucket full of petrol handy, ready to help by pouring it on fire.

exactly.

all pimps in Russia need the 'privacy glass'

Exactly, answered it yourself there really eh?

5 vs 3... Over time it may still heat up but short term it takes longer. Also helps block UV rays! And I meant whilst the car was left unoccupied.

I never said keep them out, merely a deterant. Dyed class can't, I agree, but as I use film applied inside the vehicle, same effect. Personal can mean whatever you wish it to be, no holds barred.

What's the point? Tint does both all in one? Plus it's about 1/10th the cost.
