Whistling radio

Featured Replies

My son was playing with bass etc the other day while his music (if that's what it's called!!) was on. Since then my radio has become a little 'whistly.'

Being tone deaf, I have a basic question. Is this to do with settings and if so which of bass, mid and treble causes it? Or is it a sign that a speaker is dusty or on its way out?

Thanks in advance

Do you hear this when playing CDs/Mp3's or just the radio?

I'd have a play with the settings on the head unit (by pressing the music note on the head unit) and put everyone (Bass/Treble/etc) back to 0 until you find one that you're happy with/stops 'whistling'. If that doesn't solve it then you may have a speaker on its way out although after a blast of your son's music it shoudn't have affected them that bad.

Thanks for the reply.  It is just the radio and so I'm pretty sure its just poorer reception (AM) than before.  I've done as you say and it doesn't make much odds.

Thanks again

If you rev does the whistle increase? If so it's an earthing/shielding issue

Gadgetman: I will look into that but I don't think so.

If it's not the above either, remove the headunit (pretty easy, ask if needs be), and check the areial attached to it. Might be loose/have a cut somewhere?

i've had it previously when the regulator on the alternator gave out, was very whiny, however that was on a friends car with a stereo that was sucking upwards of 100Amps when at full chat, very impressive but rather short lived car

Thanks. I have taken the head unit out and the antenna connection is sound. Could be dodgy elsewhere I guess but not at the head unit.

Just like that!

Not sure I'm in that league!
