Fabia ECU & Glow plug light (flashing) on

Featured Replies

Hi guys

I was wondering if you could help me with an issue I have been having with my 54 plate VRS. At the weekend I noticed that when started the car took a couple more cranks to fire, only a second more but still a little different. Then when I started it my, glow plug light started flashing and the ecu light came on the dash. Car was running fine and still I ran it as normal. I was taking it into a garage today when after starting the car cut out a couple of times. It did fire up again but something certainly up with it.

The garage have coded it and got 3 codes.

3007 - Camshaft Position (CMP) Sensor- G40 - No Signal

341 - Camshaft Position Sensor Circuit

322 IGN/Distributor Eng Speed Inp Circ

Codes have been cleared but I am sure they will come back.

Has anyone had experience of these issues? and if so any advice how to fix them would be great.

Thanks a lot

P3007 - Camshaft Position Sensor (G40): No Signal

P0341 - Camshaft Position Sensor (G40): Implausible Signal

P0322 - Engine Speed Sensor (G28): No Signal. This is the crankshaft position sensor.

What are the speedo and rev counter doing? Are they both working normally?

Yea counters are working normal, only change was on start-up. Just been out for a quick run now and no lights at the minute and she started normally.

Thanks for the detail on the codes, just hope if its a sensor issue its not too hard to get to.

The two sensors are both connected directly to the ECU for both power and signal. Given the the speedo and rev counter are both working, then the fuses are OK. If both sensors were really faulty the car wouldn't run.

It could be a lazy ECU power relay (relay plate, position 15).

Next time it happens and you fail to start, see if the rev counter shows a value or stays at zero.

Ok great I'll have a look at that next time.

Thanks again and I'll report back when the problem crops up which will probably be at the weekend when I'm using it a lot lol

Used the car again this morning and it did its couple of extra turnovers before starting and hey presto on came the lights again   only very briefly cut out before I set off and was fine since.

Check the rev and speedo counters and both were working fine all the time.

The mystery continues.....

Took it back to the garage to get plugged in and the 3007 code came up again. The garage reckons its a case of changing the crank sensor but as you said if it was that surely the car just wouldn't run. At a bit of a loss with what to do now really as I can imagine changing the crank sensor is quite a big job How easy is the relay box to get to? If I can I think I'd like to check if they are all working (that's when I find out how to check them that is lol)

Is there anything else that might be causing it? When setting off today I felt the revs drop like it was about to stall so gave it some gas and it never died. It couldn't be some kind of filter could it?

Thanks again

The plot thickens with this one. I got the camshaft sensor changed and as of yet no warning lights have come of the dash.

However it's still having the starting issue with occasional stall and then today on the motorway the thing lost power and died. Looked in the rear window and saw a lot of smoke so thought she was kaput. stoped, turned the key and she started back up and carried on as if nothing had happened. No warning lights on the dash either:

If anyone has had a similar problem to this I'd be really greatful to get any tips as I'm aware I could spend loads at a garage trying to rule out everything and get this fixed.

Cheers

Would you say the smoke was black, white or grey?

The wire on the camshaft sensor on my vRS somehow has become damaged and the ecu light came on and a fault code registered.  The engine ran as normal.  I cleared the coded but it returned.  Decided to replace the camshaft sensor.  Got one from TPS.  Fitting it was a bit of a fiddle and took about 30 minutes.

Not a difficult job but you need to take care.

It looked greyish in the mirror but hard to fully tell in the dark, def not black though.. There was a lot of it, she's always smoked a little if you put your foot down, but this was more smoke than that.

changing the camshaft sensor seems to have stopped the warning lights coming on but not solved the issue.

Grey smoke would indicate a timing issue. When was the cambelt last changed?

I'll need to double check but I'm sure it just had it done at 40k when I got it and its done 80k more so reading some bits about how often to change it looks like it will need doing. Seems to be the advice also to get the water pump changed at the same time?

If its the cambelt causing all this I'm guessing the timing issues could be causing the slight stutter on start up too?

I've had a similar issue, but its very intermittent. only happens when its cold, but even then, not consistently, could occur one cold day, but could be colder the next and it would be fine.

I can tell when its likey to happen as it is less responsive and has a slight misfire (although i know it isnt a missfire) and if im not careful, will just cut out. will restart again but lights will appear on dash as with yourself.

I have had camsensor done but issue still remains, on vcds it said cam or crank sensor, so had cam sensor done at same time as new cam belt etc. but didnt cure it. (talking around 2-3yrs ago now) Id like to do the cranksensor myself, but no idea where/how easy it is to do.

Know anyone with or searched the VCDS map to check the timing? Think you are right with Cam belt been due, but it is likely they may just to change it all, but not alter the timing if it is within skoda tolerances.

Na I unfortunately don't know anyone with the VCDS map. Today the car did the same coming home, doing about 65 on the motorway lost power and then stalled about 50. I looked in the mirror and no smoke this time, maybe because I was pumping the accelerator like yesterday. I just clutched it this time and restarted as I was moving and it started up fine.

Took it back to the garage and the same 3007 code has come up even with no lights on the dash.

I need the belt doing anyways but trying to think of other areas it could be. As rwbaldwin said maybe the relay gone bad? Or maybe something filter related?

I have a feeling this may be one of those issues that is a right pain to solve

sorry VCDS map is a google maps on here of all the people who have VCDS, means easy to find someone near you with it.

It is fun when it cuts out on tht motorway isn't it, do you get any warning/inclination its going to happen before it does?

Though your mechanic might be able to tell you about the timing depending on what comp etc he has.

It's certainly an experience lol. I can tell the slight engine tone change so just clutched it today. I get the feeling this will only get worse so I know I need to sort it.

Sounds like yours is a lot more random which like you I could cope with tbh, but this will happen almost every trip I'm sure.

Thanks for the map info I'll check that out

Yeh its not too bad ti live with, happens around 2-4 times a year, and clears itself after a while. I am going to get vcds on it to check of Amy codes are there from last time though.

I think either yours is a different issue to mine or just crap luck yours is worse.

Keep us updated as to when/if you get it resolved.

Don't suppose anyone has a diagram of where the cranksensor is do they?

  • Author

Yea I will do, no cut out today so I think my best bet will be to get it looked at when I get the belt done.

Thanks for the advice
