power steering pump

Featured Replies

my car (51 fabia 1.4 mpi) has been for a diagnostic on the power steering. It came back that the j500 sensor in the pump is cutting out and that i need a new pump as it is not the angle sensor on the steering rack. skoda quoted £1215 but i can get hold of one for £250 new. looking to get  mechanic to fit it. Is there anything to note. I know it is in a dodgy place under the battery. but will the sensor work straight away once fitted. really skeptical about going to a mechanic that has never done it, but dont want to pay the ridiculous prices of skoda and other mechanics. been quoted £40 an hour labour, how long will the job take? I am young and have a child on the way next month so need to be tight with money.

Any help will be much appreciated

thanks

Is it best to get new or second hand pump if they are as temperamental as i have read  ?

Apparently it's an easy job, front bumper and battery box has to come off but access is then good and the unit is completely self-contained with just three plugs and two hoses to disconnect. I would say a couple of hours. Get a new pump unit.

just the pump is a very easy job.

Took me a few hours as i changed everything on mine.

- Cleaned out the steering rack

- Fitted new angle sensor

- Fitted new sensor wiring loom

- Fitted new pump

- Fitted all pressure hoses from the pump to the rack

Cost about £50 from the scrap yard and like i say, took about 2 - 3 hours maybe. Thats on the floor with a jack and axel stands as well.
